US shops lose lives and $100bn in wave of violent theft

Violent thefts have prompted warnings from shops in the US that “unprecedented” levels of crime led to losses of $112 billion last year.

Workers have been beaten and even killed when confronting suspected shoplifters, leading many stores to employ extra security guards to protect staff. Organised crime gangs have been caught repeatedly on camera storming through stores, grabbing handfuls of merchandise from the shelves before running off.
