Three Burlington rainbow crosswalks recommended for removal due to high maintenance costs … Burnout fans hardest hit

After approximately $27,000 was initially spent and more for subsequent repairs of three rainbow crosswalks installed in 2021, City of Burlington staff have recommended they be removed due to “persistent quality issues” with the materials used.

If the crosswalks are returned to the less-colourful “ladder” style, staff propose wrapping two traffic poles at each intersection with rainbow colours, using graffiti- and sticker-resistant wrap, to recognize the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

In a report recommending removal of three-year-old Pride crosswalks — at Plains Road West and Botanical Drive, Upper Middle Road in front of M.M. Robinson High School and Fairview Street at Drury Lane — staff also cited cases of vandalism.
