An extraordinary saga involving one of France’s most successful brands has just delivered an astonishing new chapter.

Nicolas Puech, 81, the largest individual shareholder in the family-controlled luxury fashion business Hermès International SCA, sparked controversy last year when he announced that he was planning to formally adopt his 51-year-old former gardener and bequeath him half of his €12 billion (£10 billion) fortune.
