The killing of a Hindu teenager by a group of “cow vigilantes” who thought he was Muslim has laid bare how mob violence in the name of protecting holy animals has become normalised in Narendra Modi’s India.
Aryan Mishra, 19, was travelling in a car with friends in the northern city of Faridabad when they were spotted and chased by another vehicle for some 18 miles, apparently on suspicion of being Muslim cow smugglers.
