In Verdun, a working-class but gentrifying neighbourhood of Montreal, Stéphane Altimas was celebrating. Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party had held the seat in the French-speaking province almost uninterrupted since the Second World War, but the separatist Bloc Québécois claimed a surprise victory last month.
“It pained me to vote against my party, but it sends Trudeau a message — we’re done with you and we’re done with the Liberals, unless something changes,” Altimas, 43, a maths teacher who voted for the Bloc, said. “Bon débarras,” he added — good riddance.
