Why postwar rationing helped boost the health of baby boomers

The rationing that lasted for almost a decade beyond the end of World War Two took its toll on British morale, but it may have had a long-lasting positive effect on the health of baby boomers, a study has found.

People born during the years when sugar and sweets were rationed, which lasted until 1953, grew up to have a 35 per cent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes and a 20 per cent lower risk of high blood pressure by the time they reach their fifties and sixties, researchers have discovered.
