
The BBC has sparked controversy by naming a player who was banned from a tournament in 2022 for elevated testosterone levels as its BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year.
The Zambia striker Barbra Banda scored four goals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, including a hat-trick against Australia, and has also been a leading player for Orlando Pride.
The 24-year-old was withdrawn from the 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nations after breaching testosterone limits. She has been able to compete in the World Cup and Olympics because Fifa and the International Olympic Committee both allow more leeway.
