At least five people in Germany were killed by fireworks as New Year’s Eve celebrations were marred by skirmishes with police and the throwing of banned explosives.
In recent years areas of Berlin and other cities have become used to fierce pyrotechnic street battles where emergency services workers are pelted with projectiles, buildings are set on fire and passers-by are frequently caught in the crossfire.
