The inside story of Delta flight 4819: How a crash-landing in Toronto came within a single spark of being so much worse

Peter Carlson was going to be away from his wife and three kids for only a few days. He was headed to visit an old friend, a paramedic chief who had invited him to a conference in Toronto. By now, as he neared the end to an uneventful flight from Minneapolis, Carlson wasn’t far above Pearson International Airport.

Below, Michael Nolan was ready to pick him up. He was waiting, working away in his SUV, next to Pearson’s Runway 23. He didn’t pick up everyone from the airport, but for Carlson — the guy Nolan had met 11 years ago at a conference in Salt Lake City, and whom he considered a paramedic thought leader — he was willing to put in the effort.
