Calais police fight losing battle to block migrants using lorries

On the beaches around Calais, dramatic clashes between migrants and gendarmes armed with drones, batons and tear gas have become commonplace.

But tucked away in the backstreets, another game of cat and mouse is quietly taking place: between the poorest migrants living in northern France, and the lorry drivers departing for Britain.

Attempts by migrants to enter the UK clandestinely by lorry peaked in 2016, prompting a huge increase in security around ferry ports, truck stops and the Channel tunnel.
