President Xi has outlined an economic vision for his “alternative” group of non-western powers as its members battle a wave of sanctions and tariffs from Washington and its allies.
Xi welcomed the leaders of Russia, Iran, India and other Eurasian states to a meeting of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO), which campaigns for a greater role for non-western powers on the world stage.
Several leaders complained of facing the growing threat of US and EU sanctions. Member states include western bête noires such as Iran, Russia and Belarus, but even supposed friends of the West such as India are facing crippling tariffs from President Trump, in part because of their ties to Moscow.
