Up to 50 passengers aboard a vessel sailing from Senegal to the Canaries were allegedly tortured or thrown overboard, with some victims even accused of witchcraft
Spanish police have arrested 19 people accused of killing and torturing up to 50 fellow passengers aboard a migrant vessel, allegedly throwing overboard victims accused of witchcraft.
The wooden vessel from Senegal was rescued adrift south of Gran Canaria on August 24 with 248 survivors aboard, Spanish police said. Authorities believe the boat originally carried about 300 people and many of the missing are presumed to have been cast into the Atlantic during the 11-day voyage.
