Why it’s time to get rid of grades from our schools
There are many problems in our educational system that will take a great deal of energy, ingenuity, and money to fix. But there is one policy change we could make that would immediately garner better results for students: it is time to end grading in schools.
Grades are so much a part of our education system that they feel inevitable. But several years ago, at the Trent School of Education where I am a faculty member, we did away with grades for our Bachelor of Education students. The result? Far better quality of work and learning. Such change doesn’t have to be limited to the university either. It can be this way in all levels of schooling, and it is well past time.
