Council sacks tree surgeon who put up Union flags

A parish council has cancelled its £9,000 contract with a tree surgeon after he put up Union flags and St George’s crosses.

Billy Crotty, from Wimpole in Cambridgeshire, hung about 300 flags on lamp posts near the town of Royston, Hertfordshire.

His tree surgeon business had been working with Steeple Morden parish council for more than a decade and had been commissioned to remove conifers.
