From PA Cat ~ Johnny Cash’s version of “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.” Longfellow wrote the words in December 1863 during the Civil War, when he was nursing his wounded son, a lieutenant in the Union Army. There are two stanzas in the original that are omitted when it is sung as a carol; you can read the full text here.
