France sparks outcry with plan for prison to house Islamists & drug traffickers near former Devil’s Island penal colony

French plans to build a maximum-security prison wing for drug traffickers and Islamic militants near a former penal colony in French Guiana have sparked an outcry among local people and officials.

The wing would form part of a $450m (£337m) prison announced in 2017 that is expected to be completed by 2028 and hold 500 inmates. The prison would be built in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, a town bordering Suriname that once received prisoners shipped by Napoleon III in the 1800s, some of whom were sent to the notorious Devil’s Island off the coast of French Guiana.

The French justice minister, Gérald Darmanin, announced plans to build the high-security wing during an official visit to French Guiana on Saturday. He said in a Facebook post that 15 of the wing’s 60 spaces would be reserved for Islamic militants.

Canadians Fear Trump’s Tariffs Will Create a ‘Ghost Town’ in Ontario

When asked what their city would be without auto-parts makers, Pauline Ridley and Colleen Barrette, two union officials, quickly replied, “A ghost town.”

President Trump’s tariff war against Canada has unleashed widespread anxiety in Windsor, Ontario, the country’s auto-making capital. Much of it has focused on the fate of large vehicle assembly plants.

But the concern is just as high, or higher, throughout the roughly 100 smaller auto-parts plants in Windsor and the surrounding county that employ some 9,000 workers. By comparison, about 5,400 people work for the three auto factories in Windsor.

Jeremy Bowen: Goodwill running out as UK, France and Canada demand Israel end Gaza offensive

Israel went to war after the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023 armed with an arsenal of weapons mostly paid for, supplied and then resupplied by the United States.

Its other allies gave Israel something just as potent in its own way: a deep credit of goodwill and solidarity, based on revulsion at the killings of 1,200 people, mostly Israeli civilians, and the sight of 251 people being dragged into captivity in Gaza as hostages.

Now it seems that Israel’s credit has gone, at least as far as France, the United Kingdom and Canada are concerned. They have issued their strongest condemnation yet of the way Israel is fighting the war in Gaza.

Trump: Someone is not ‘telling the facts’ about Biden’s cancer diagnosis

“Someone is not telling the facts” about Joe Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis, Donald Trump has claimed.

The US president suggested Mr Biden or his medical team had sought to cover up his illness and cognitive decline during his time in office, calling it a “very sad situation”.

Mr Biden’s office revealed on Sunday that the former president had been diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer which had metastasised to the bone.

Asked about his predecessor’s diagnosis, Mr Trump said: “I think it’s very sad, actually. I’m surprised that the public wasn’t notified a long time ago because to get to stage nine, that’s a long time.”

Here’s why electric vehicle sales have dropped across Canada for the third year in row

A new survey from AutoTrader shows electric vehicle sales have dropped for the third year in a row.

According to the data, interest in electric vehicles has continued to drop since 2022 and the ongoing threat of U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs has contributed to the downward trend. Consumers have raised concerns over reduced government incentives, the lack of electric vehicle infrastructure, and cost, the survey said.

‘A life of crime taught us how to kill  on the front line’

It took some time, but Ukraine now allows its prisoners to have early release in return for taking up a gun to fight Russia.

When he pulled a knife and robbed a jewellery shop in President Zelensky’s home city of Kryvyhi Rih, the convict and career criminal codenamed “Makar” was not thinking of a future in the army.

Yet since he was freed from prison along with thousands of other Ukrainian convicts last summer on condition they fought at the front, the 47-year-old, now a respected and wounded veteran of Ukraine’s 71st Jaeger Brigade, is certain that his life of crime and prison prepared him well for the stresses of war.

Makar is proud to have commanded three other convicted thieves — Zippo, Alavarez and Dronik — in an assault team sent up against Russian positions near the gutted city of Vovchansk.

Mia Hughes: Nova Scotia ignores growing evidence against youth gender affirming care

In recent years, a clear pattern has emerged in paediatric gender medicine: every country that has reviewed the evidence for interventions such as puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for adolescents has found it to be exceptionally weak, and responded by shifting towards cautious, psychotherapeutic care. In sharp contrast, Nova Scotia has just announced an expansion of its paediatric gender services to ensure that youth across the province can access these controversial medical treatments.

U.S. to pay nearly $5 million to family of Jan. 6 rioter Ashli Babbitt

President Donald Trump’s administration is set to pay nearly $5 million to the family of Ashli Babbitt to settle a lawsuit brought by the estate of the Trump supporter who was fatally shot by police when she tried to storm the House Speaker’s Lobby during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Babbitt’s family filed the wrongful death lawsuit in early 2024, seeking $30 million. Lawyers for both sides told a judge this month that they had reached a settlement in principle, reversing the Justice Department’s earlier opposition in the case, which had been set for trial in July 2026.

KLEIN: UBC lawsuit lifts the veil on Canada’s divisive identity politics

Over the past nine years, Canadian institutions — egged on by activist groups and enabled by government — have embraced a form of social engineering that’s done real damage to our country. We were told it would make society more inclusive. In reality, it’s divided Canadians along lines of race, identity, politics, and belief. It’s undermined trust in our institutions, punished dissent, and created a culture where some voices are valued more than others.

Muslim Council proposes bill to recognize state of Palestine

A new draft bill by the National Council of Canadian Muslims calls on Parliament to formally recognize the state of Palestine, marking what the group says would be a historic step in Canadian foreign policy, according to Blacklock’s Reporter.

“What is happening right now in Gaza is one of the great moral issues of our time, if not the greatest,” CEO of the National Council Stephen Brown told reporters.

“This doesn’t bode well for us as Canadians … First model legislation in Canadian history that charts our own course as a nation on Palestinian human rights.”

Why the West’s next mass blackouts might be ‘made in China’

Discovery of a Chinese ‘kill-switch’ in a US solar farm sparks fears of widespread power cuts

“Cheap, clean power, to give us energy security,” declared Ed Miliband, as he strode through a grassy field flanked by rows of solar panels.

With a film crew in tow, the Energy Secretary visited Castle Hill solar farm, in East Yorkshire, last Thursday to promote the launch of Great British Energy, the new publicly owned energy company.

If he gets his way, there will soon be many more sites like it. Under Labour’s clean power mission, the Government wants to almost triple the amount of British solar capacity by 2030.

The Easiest Thing Republicans Can Do Right Now Is Find Out Who Was Running The Country For Four Years

On Sunday it was revealed that President Joe Biden has an aggressive form of prostate cancer — a diagnosis that likely was made in the early days of his presidency. The revelation comes on top of the quasi-reckoning taking place about the cover-up of Biden’s cognitive decline. While Democrats and the propaganda press try to obscure their roll in the cover-up, Republicans need to get their boots dirty for once and start figuring out who was acting as president for four years.

IDF claps back against Anita Anand’s criticism of the Gaza war

TEL AVIV — The international spokesman for the Israeli Defence Forces has clapped back against Foreign Minister Anita Anand’s criticism of the Gaza war, even as the Liberal government broadened its messaging to call for Hamas to disarm and cede power.

In a scrum with reporters after being sworn in last week, Anand described Israel’s post-October 7 war on Hamas as “aggression,” accusing the Jewish state of using food as a political toll. She cited a death toll of 50,000 in the war, a figure released by the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry.
