The parents of a nine-year-old girl were arrested by police after they complained about their daughter’s primary school in a WhatsApp group.

They said they were questioned on suspicion of harassment, malicious communications and causing a nuisance on school property.

Mark Carney promises plan to ‘reform’ the CBC in coming days

OTTAWA — Liberal Leader Mark Carney says he wants to reform the CBC/Radio-Canada to ensure the public broadcaster is viable.

During a campaign stop in Montreal Friday, Carney said that the “only” way to make the public broadcaster “viable” and “vibrant” was through reforms that he promised to announce in the coming days.

Vance tells Greenlanders: Your country is cold as ‘s—’, and China’s coming for you

JD Vance has ruffled feathers during a controversial trip to Greenland, where he accused Denmark of effectively abandoning the territory to Beijing and Moscow and told residents their climate was “cold as s—”.

Mr Vance declared that the US could no longer “bury our head in the snow” and ignore China’s attempts to establish itself in the semi-autonomous territory during the first ever visit to Greenland by a US vice-president on Friday.

He explicitly urged Greenlanders to vote for independence from Denmark, urging its citizens to join the US’s “security umbrella” in comments that have caused outrage in Copenhagen.

Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives can pull ahead of Mark Carney’s Liberals with a focus on this one issue, poll suggests

OTTAWA—Advantage, Mark Carney.

Canadians view the Liberal leader as better able to stand up to U.S. President Donald Trump when compared to Conservative rival Pierre Poilievre, suggests a new poll by Abacus Data shared exclusively with the Star.

Abacus’ latest election survey shows the Liberals and Conservatives in a dead heat, though more Canadians appear open to voting for the Grits.

Will Trump allow Russia to restart Nord Stream 2?

Many in Europe have convinced themselves that the EU’s relationship with Russia will not normalise after the end of the war in Ukraine. However, it seems that the Trump administration has other plans. It could use normalisation, especially in the energy relationship, as a carrot to try and persuade Russia to accept a peace deal. If Washington were prepared to pull that lever, Europe would find itself in an intractable position.

The German newspaper Handelsblatt has reported that, according to Russia, restarting Nord Stream 2 is actively being discussed as part of negotiations. It is never easy to distinguish truth from rumour in times of war, but it wouldn’t be totally surprising if this were the case. Previously, the US has been interested in exploring energy cooperation with Russia as part of the peace talks.

Mark Carney accused of plagiarism in Oxford thesis

Mark Carney has been accused of plagiarising his University of Oxford thesis.

On Friday, the Canadian prime minister and former governor of the Bank of England was forced to deny allegations he copied 10 passages of text for his 1995 doctorate.

The allegations are a blow to his election campaign. He faces a knife-edge vote on April 28 after calling a snap election against the backdrop of an aggressive trade war with Donald Trump.

CHARLEBOIS: Canola, pork and seafood burn while feds worship auto sector

In the shadow of endless headlines about Donald Trump and the American political circus, another crisis is quietly unfolding on Canadian soil — this one in our fields, barns and fishing boats.

As of March 17, China has imposed crippling tariffs on key Canadian agri-food exports: 100% on grains and canola, and 25% on pork, lobster and seafood. These aren’t abstract threats. These are real, immediate penalties on farmers, fishers and harvesters — Canada’s food producers.

German Governments Ban Police From Joining AfD

Nice job you have there. It would be a shame if you were to lose it for being disloyal to the ruling clique.

Of course, the powers that be in Germany don’t call their threats to fire supporters of AfD an assurance that the people they hand guns to are committed to enforcing the speech codes of the German elites’ choosing; they couch their order in the much nicer sounding assurance that everybody has the same loyalty to the Constitution as the ruling clique.

WENZEL: Carney’s net-zero ideology would undoubtedly force home prices

With Mark Carney in the prime minister’s chair, it’s safe to assume his brand of climate-focused policy would drive the next wave of federal priorities. On the surface, that might sound appealing to those pushing net zero emissions.

But, when you peel back the layers, especially on the topic of net-zero housing, what you’re left with is an agenda that threatens to make housing even more unaffordable than is currently believed by the average Canadian. On the campaign trail he talks about building ‘millions of homes’ with no experience or real knowledge of what it would take to build these homes.

‘We should have been hammered a long time ago’: African countries thank Trump for aid wake up call

European defence hawks and African public health experts are not known for speaking the same language, but in recent weeks Donald Trump has forced them to take the same line.

Just as Europe has realised it must stand on its own and pay up to defend itself without American muscle, African countries are realising they cannot rely on US generosity to provide health care to their people.

Steep aid cuts from some of the world’s biggest donors, particularly America, are blowing holes in African health budgets as Washington, London, Paris and others slash their assistance spending.

Tariffs, Elon Musk and charging headaches: Quebec is suddenly seeing trouble in its EV paradise

MONTREAL — U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest tariff on the auto sector is a new blow to electric vehicle owners in Quebec but, in the province with the most electric vehicles in the country, EVs were already losing their lustre.

Robert Brunelle, a resident of Saint-Lambert, Quebec, is almost relieved after getting into a car accident last year. He bought a Tesla Model S in 2021 because it’s “a great car.” It’s fast. It’s quiet. It’s cutting-edge technology.
