CDU pamphlet scandal: Resignation templates sent to AfD lawmakers backfire spectacularly

Germany’s Christian Democrats (CDU), who currently rule the country in coalition with the Christian Social Union (CSU), have sent out pamphlets to all AfD lawmakers, explaining to them just how dangerous their party is and providing a template resignation letter to facilitate their departure from the anti-migration party.

The 35-page booklet titled “Decline for Germany. No Alternative” claims that the party is “harmful to democracy, anti-Semitic, nationalist.”

“Stop AfD at Any Cost”: Rule of Law Takes a Back Seat in Germany

Germany’s declining establishment parties are again undermining the very institutions they pretend to defend in order to limit the capabilities of the rising Alternative for Germany (AfD).

In Rhineland-Palatinate, in the southwest of the country, where the populist party recently secured a record election result, the CDU/CSU, SPD and Greens are teaming up to alter the constitution. They want to change the rules for parliamentary inquiry committees so as to block the AfD from convening investigative committees of their own.

German Court Blocks Intelligence Agency From Branding AfD ‘Confirmed Extremist

A court in Cologne has dealt a significant blow to Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, ruling that it may not, for now, classify the opposition Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) as a “confirmed right-wing extremist” organisation.

In a decision published on Thursday, February 26th, the Administrative Court said that the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) must await the outcome of the main legal proceedings before treating the party as “gesichert rechtsextremistisch”—a designation that would allow expanded surveillance powers and further embolden calls for a party ban.

German MPs Vote to Keep Law Criminalising Insults Against Politicians

The vote comes as prosecutions under the statute surge and critics warn the law is being used to shield those in power from public scrutiny.

The vote took place on Thursday evening, with all parliamentary groups except the AfD opposing the motion.

The AfD is losing patience with MAGA

The AfD is divided. Donald Trump’s latest foreign policy adventures have split the Right-wing nationalist German party which, as Politico reports, is are now becoming increasingly sceptical of the US President’s agenda. This is clear from the response to Trump’s threat of further tariffs on Europe over Greenland, with AfD co-leader Alice Weidel suggesting yesterday that Germany should enter talks with the US to avoid a trade war.

Germany’s nationalist AfD party looks to take power in 2026

BERLIN — For the 13 years since its founding, the nationalist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party — labeled “right-wing extremist” by the country’s domestic intelligence agency and accused by others of xenophobia, antisemitism and Islamophobia — has stood in opposition. Opposition to the European Union. Opposition to immigration. And, as the largest party outside the governing coalition after last year’s federal elections, opposition to Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

This year, the AfD is looking to lead for the first time — by winning control of a state government.
