Mayor Olivia Chow’s first annual skating party at Nathan Phillips Square was cut short on Sunday by demonstrators calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Chow had invited residents to celebrate the new year, along with city councillors and members of the new Professional Women’s Hockey League, at an event with free hot chocolate. But as soon as Chow took to the microphone to welcome attendees, she was interrupted by pro-Palestinian protesters and was soon escorted off the ice.

The president of France’s supreme audit institution admits to deliberately delaying the release of a report on illegal immigration costs until after the parliamentary debate—and vote—on immigration law. The report, just released by the Cour des Comptes, shows the exorbitant sum of €1.8 billion charged to illegal immigration in 2023.
Published on Thursday, January 4th, the report is a harsh indictment of government policy, in particular the actions of Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, who boasts of having taken a tough stance on managing illegal immigrants. Darmanin claims to have introduced an effective policy for expelling illegal immigrants and says the expulsion rate of delinquent foreigners is up by 30%.

Toronto’s police chief apologized Sunday after a video posted on social media of officers handing coffee to protesters supporting Palestinians was criticized by politicians.
On Saturday, police closed the overpass on Avenue Road at Highway 401, saying on social media they were on the scene to keep demonstrators and passing traffic safe. Video from the overpass posted on Facebook by Palestine House, a community organization, shows protesters holding Palestinian flags and chanting “Free Palestine.”

A top JPMorgan strategist has predicted Biden will pull out of the presidential race, American cities will be hit by rolling blackouts and driverless cars will face boycotts.
Michael Cembalest has compiled a list of his ‘Ten Surprises’ for 2024, speculating on topics ranging from the value of the dollar to the war in Ukraine.
The investor theorized that Biden would drop out of the 2024 election after Super Tuesday and cite health reasons as he faces dismal poll numbers.

Housing was a hot topic long before federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre released his recent mini-documentary on the subject. Housing Hell has now been viewed by millions of Canadians, discussed by pundits, applauded as a master-class in political communications and derided as inaccurate and ignorant of how COVID-19 affected our economy.
But regardless of your position on Mr. Poilievre’s video, it nonetheless continues down the same problematic path such discussions always take. Specifically, it leaves out the people who build the vast majority of houses for Canadians: the private sector.

The German-nationalist political party has prospered from the recent inability of other parties to be trusted on issues of national sovereignty.
‘Liberalism is the death of nations” — a famous line from an infamous book. Arthur Moeller van den Bruck, the author, did not have American progressivism in mind. His critique was aimed at liberal democracy as a political regime. Moeller coined the term “Third Reich” in his 1923 book, where these words originate. He was not a National Socialist but part of the “conservative revolution,” a diverse group of writers in the Weimar Republic. Alongside the more radical Völkische Bewegung, an influential ethno-nationalist movement, the “conservative revolutionaries” shaped the social atmosphere that paved the way for National Socialism.

We are supposed to believe that overnight the PA has changed its spots. After all, Abbas wears a suit.
No more is it between good and bad. Now, for 2024 and beyond, it’s between bad and worse.
Take your pick. For instance, between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority, which is better, which is worse?
Which terrorists, in other words, should get to run Gaza, “the day after?” Biden and his people prefer the PA…the lesser of two evils.

Today, January 7, 2024, marks the Eastern Orthodox Christmas, according to the Julian calendar. It seems an appropriate time to recall that less than two weeks ago, on December 25, 2023, the more familiar Roman Catholic and Protestant Christmas was being celebrated in the West. This winter, however, festivities were cancelled. Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus, was a ghost town . “This year,” said Brother John Vinh a Franciscan monk, “without the Christmas tree and without lights, there’s just darkness.” Alas, for many other Christians, Christmas was also just darkness.
While around much of the world, the holiday was being celebrated with peace and joy, in Nigeria, starting on Christmas Eve and into Christmas Day, Muslims massacred nearly 200 Christians.

Designed by engineers, our electricity grids are remarkable, but finely balanced affairs, being wrecked by the chaotic delivery of wind and solar power.
There are 3 electricity essentials – that the power source and its delivery to homes and businesses be: 1) reliable; 2) secure; and 3) affordable. Wind and solar score NIL on all three counts. Wind is wholly weather-dependent and solar is both weather and sunshine dependent, despite the hype the occasional power they generate can’t be economically stored at any scale. And, adding the staggering cost of the subsidies they attract, cost multitudes more than coal, gas or nuclear power.

Europe’s populists are on the cusp of real power
Of the torrent of elections scheduled throughout the world this year, the most transformative promises to span an entire continent. In all of the 27 nations which constitute the European Union, and which will ask their citizens to vote for EU parliamentarians in early June, at least one New or far-Right party is now active. In several (Finland, Italy, Slovakia, Sweden), they form part of a coalition government of the Right. In three (Hungary, Italy, Slovakia), they lead the government.
I’m not sure what happened to NBC News, but its online presence is filled with bad social justice rants that look like parodies of wokeness. And that’s not even talking about its Think focus which at one point published a defense of pedophilia.

Even after giving away billions of dollars, Gates seems to have become no less poor. How does he do it?
Ironically, I am typing this review using the product of Microsoft, for which Gates is probably most famous. Even someone using a computer manufactured by his great rival Steve Jobs will most likely be using a Microsoft package for their word processing and presentations. But ask someone about Bill Gates now, and they will also associate him with global vaccination programmes via the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and, more specifically, the COVID vaccination programme. There is so much more to Bill Gates, though, and some of it is pure evil.
In his new book, Gates of Hell, Daniel Jupp first points out how indescribably ugly Gates is. This may seem unkind and irrelevant, but Jupp reckons that his physical appearance largely accounts for his character. On the one hand, he is a ‘nerd’ and, on the other hand, he is intensely competitive, which, in later life, is expressed in being a bully.

An east London borough led by a controversial mayor has been accused of “multiple criminal offences” over its failure to take down Palestinian flags.
Lawyers have written to the Metropolitan Police over the “proliferation” of flags, as well as posters and stickers, with allegedly inflammatory messages in Tower Hamlets.
Lutfur Rahman, the borough’s mayor, had previously been barred from public office for five years for corruption, but having served his ban was voted back into the post in elections in May 2022.
