Antisemitism and Islamophobia both surging in NY during Hamas-Israel war: Poll

Antisemitism is raging in New York during the Hamas-Israel war while Islamophobia against Muslims also is on the rise, a new survey released Monday reveals.

About three-quarters of New York voters — 73% — said Jews in the state are experiencing a great deal or some antisemitism, while only 16% said there is not much or any at all, the Siena College poll found.

And of those who cited antisemitism as a problem, 75% said the hatred increased after Hamas invaded Israel on Oct. 7.

A new report has found that the top one per cent of earners are disproportionately driving the climate crisis, and researchers are calling for substantially higher taxes on income, wealth and corporate profits to fix it.

After five months of consecutive global temperature records, climate scientists say global warming has become an equity issue as much as an environmental crisis.

‘Everything is not going right for them’: feds’ confusing messaging on pause on home heating oil carbon pricing puts them ‘on the defensive,’ says Nanos

The Liberals’ unclear messaging on the carbon tax—a key component of their climate change file—is putting them on the defensive, especially since the Conservatives have been consistently clear on cutting the carbon tax, says pollster Nik Nanos.

When Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (Papineau, Que.) announced on Oct. 26 a three-year national pause on the carbon levy applied to fuel for oil furnaces, it was subsequently reported by most media—including by The Hill Times—as a “carbon price carveout for Atlantic Canadians who use home heating oil.”

Trudeau’s Liberals will try to recapture some public confidence with their fiscal update

OTTAWA — As they’re being pummelled in the polls and an increasing number of Canadians are rejecting the idea that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals are still capable of managing everything from the economy to climate change, the government will seek Tuesday to recapture some public confidence.

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland will unveil what’s called the “fall economic statement,” a mid-year fiscal update that’s a mix of reporting on the government’s expenditures and current financial picture, a projection of how that picture might evolve in the coming months and any programs the government sees fit to introduce.

Errors in explaining impact of carbon tax on inflation shake confidence in Bank of Canada

The Bank of Canada’s unconventional approach to communicating its stance on carbon pricing, particularly its sporadic responses on social media, has raised eyebrows.

Its responses tend to delve into semantics rather than directly addressing criticisms. It’s puzzling to witness the Bank of Canada engaging in this manner, as it calls into question its supposed non-partisan and impartial position in the increasingly polarized political debates surrounding the carbon tax.

This strategic blunder underscores the Bank of Canada’s mishandling of its communication related to carbon taxation.
