‘I support the attack 100%’: inside London’s Israel embassy protest

It’s a balmy October evening on Kensington High Street and a little old Italian lady is standing up for Hamas’s right to attack civilians. Elisa, her face increasingly close to mine, insists the terror group is “defending Palestine and the rights of the resistance”.

“We need sanctions on Israel,” she adds. “These people in Israel don’t respect human life.”

Jamie Sarkonak: Multicultural ‘awareness months’ fail to raise awareness

October is Women’s History Month. It’s also Latin American Heritage Month. And German Heritage Month. And Canadian Islamic History Month. And 2SLGBTQQIA+ History Month (though this has not been recognized by the federal government — yet). Some provinces recognize this to be Canadian Library Month .

It’s a fairly busy time in our modern update to the old liturgical calendar. Instead of numerous saintly feasts, we get cultural awareness months, remembrance days and the like. Paradoxically, there are now so many of these observances that they don’t seem particularly worth observing at all. Everyone is special, so no one is.

Mohammed Deif: Palestinian militant behind Israel attack is slippery, one-armed, one-legged former bomb maker

Answers to Lucky

The shadowy mastermind behind Hamas’ sneak weekend slaughter in Israel is a one-armed, one-legged psycho nicknamed “the cat with nine lives’’ because he’s dodged so many Israeli assassination attempts.

“Mohammed Deif,” the pseudonym used by the fearsome head of the Palestinian terror group’s military wing, chillingly warned “the enemy” that they will soon be “held to account” as Hamas launched its unprecedented attack on Israel, kicking off a war Saturday that has already left more than 1,000 Israelis and 765 Palestinians dead.

No silver bullet when it comes to solving Toronto’s rental woes, experts say

When it comes to solving a problem as complicated as Toronto’s housing crisis, there’s no such thing as a silver bullet, says one expert.

CBC Toronto spoke to Douglas Kwan, the director of advocacy and legal services at the Advocacy Centre for Tenants Ontario, and other housing experts after hearing from hundreds of our readers about how hard it is to be a tenant in the city. We asked them about some of your most popular ideas to help curb the rampant unaffordability.

Justin will keep the immigration floodgates open so why bother speculating about a fix?

Hamas attacks on Israel are not terrorism, Muslim group Cage insists

A Muslim campaign group which once praised a British terrorist who beheaded western hostages as a “beautiful young man” has justified the attack on Israelis by Hamas as “the inalienable right of the Palestinian people”.

The statement by Cage said that the word “terrorism” should not be used to describe the violence and did not express sympathy for the victims of the attacks.

Immigration Made Australia a Tolerant Place Where Muslims Chant “Gas the Jews” Outside the Sydney Opera House

Pro-Palestinian protesters were allowed to chant ‘gas the Jews’ and burn the Star of David in front of Sydney’s Opera House on Monday night – while a counter-demonstrator was arrested for attempting to fly the Israeli flag.

Police are now under fire for allowing the rally to go ahead – while telling Jewish Australians to ‘stay home’ for their own safety.

When Americans Do the Job Their Police Won’t Do

Recent instances of Vermont store-goers detaining and even assaulting would-be thieves reveal growing societal tensions seeded by progressive policies. Vermont’s law enforcement services are anemic due to anti-police rhetoric, racialization of courts, and lax prosecutorial policies. Vermont is not enforcing basic criminal laws, as gang-related violence and property crimes transform communities, drug overdoses skyrocket, and businesses are compromised. Citizens are tired of being victimized by government failure: many are taking matters into their own hands.

Israel was distracted — but so are we

The West’s fractured response reveals our weakness

How could Israel let this happen? As footage of Gazan motorbikes pelting through holes in Israel’s “smart” border fence started to circulate, of paragliders descending on a desert rave, of entire families being kidnapped or butchered in their homes, that was the question on every Western analyst’s lips: how could Israel let this happen?

The more important question, however, is this: what will the West itself do now?

This Is What ‘Decolonization’ Looks Like

On Saturday, as the raping and murdering and kidnapping were happening in Israel, Najma Sharif, a writer for Soho House magazine and Teen Vogue, posted on X: “What did y’all think decolonization meant? vibes? papers? essays? losers.”

So far, Sharif’s post has been liked 100,000 times and reposted nearly 23,000 times—by, among others, The Washington Post’s global opinions editor, Karen Attiah.

The point was: Don’t be squeamish. Never mind the Jewish girl being pulled by her hair with blood streaming between her legs. Never mind the women being raped beside the corpses of their friends at a music festival. Never mind the children and babies snatched from their parents.

‘You are unfit to serve in the House’: Congressman hits out at Squad member Ilhan Omar after she branded Israel’s retaliation against Hamas’ a ‘war crime’

A New York congressman railed against Squad member Rep. Ilhan Omar after the Minnesota Democrat asserted that Israel should not fight back against Hamas and called its military efforts a ‘war crime’.

On Monday, Omar said she opposed an Israeli military response and said that ‘peace and justice will not come from the barrel of a gun.’

Rep. Mike Lawler, a republican representing New York’s 17th congressional district, wrote on X: ‘Israel was just brutally attacked by terrorists, funded by Iran, and you (Omar) want to cut off funding and military aid and equipment.

Caroline Ellison, Adviser to Sam Bankman-Fried, Says He ‘Directed’ Her to Commit Crimes

First they were colleagues on a trading floor in New York. Then they were friends running a start-up together in Hong Kong. Eventually they became partners in a turbulent office romance chronicled in tabloid headlines around the world.

On Tuesday, in a packed Manhattan courtroom, the relationship between Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison took another turn. The two faced each other for the first time since the cryptocurrency trading companies they built together, FTX and Alameda Research, collapsed in November.

Ms. Ellison, 28, took the stand on the fifth day of Mr. Bankman-Fried’s trial on conspiracy and fraud charges stemming from FTX’s implosion. She began by taking more than 10 seconds to identify Mr. Bankman-Fried when a prosecutor asked her to point him out.

Bitterness and fury at the kibbutz where babies had their throats cut

At Kfar Aza, a kibbutz a mile from Gaza City, babies’ bodies are among the dozens being pulled from the devastation left by Hamas

All day, military chaplains and search teams tenderly wrapped tiny bodies, carrying them to waiting stretchers that bore them away from the nightmare of Kfar Aza.

The horrors that Israelis endured at the hands of Hamas in this kibbutz, a mile from the suburbs of Gaza City, defy belief. As they surged through Israeli defences, the Palestinian militants attacked Kfar Aza from four directions, starting with the “youngster’s quarter” on the western side, closest to Gaza.
