Jesse Kline: Rachel Notley’s 38% tax hike would be a death blow to Alberta prosperity

NDP Leader Rachel Notley’s plan to raise corporate taxes if she wins the Alberta election could be the final straw for any company considering doing business in the province.

At the turn of the century, Alberta provided a distinct counterpoint to the socialist dystopia the NDP had created in neighbouring British Columbia. Under NDP leadership, B.C. saw frequent changes in the premiership and suffered from poor job growth, high unemployment and the lowest investment growth in the country.

Ukraine Admits It Assassinated Russian Propagandists

The head of Ukraine’s military intelligence service has said in an interview that Kyiv has assassinated Russian propagandists.

Major General Kyrylo Budanov made the admission to the Ukrainian YouTube channel Rizni Lyudi. According to a translation by the independent Russian-language outlet Meduza, Budanov said that Ukraine had “successfully targeted quite a few people” associated with Kremlin propaganda since the start of the war nearly 15 months ago.

The Weird Lies Harry and Meghan Tell

The Duke and Duchess of Exaggeration are at it again. They simply cannot stay out of the limelight for long because they value their privacy (or something). Meghan Markle was accused during the coronation of calling paparazzi to take photos of her while she was hiking. There doesn’t seem to be any other explanation for how paparazzi would show up in exactly the right place on a deserted California hiking trail to catch the complaining Duchess mid-hike. American magazines aren’t so interested in the Harkles (as they’re called by some) that they are stalking them, are they? Or is it more likely that the attention-starved woman who didn’t get an invite to the coronation wanted to make sure she wasn’t forgotten?

Europe is turning against net zero

The contrast couldn’t be greater. In Britain a wealthy cabinet minister goes on television to boast of how he is installing a heat pump in his home – something his government is proposing to force on millions of British homeowners over the next few years in spite of them costing many thousands of pounds more than a gas or oil boiler. Meanwhile, in France, the President makes a speech calling for a ‘regulatory pause’ on green issues in order to push for the ‘re-industrialisation’ of his country.

The Cataclysm to Come

When nations die, they do so with surprising speed. Ernest Hemingway made a similar observation when a person in his novel was asked how he went bankrupt, and his reply was, “Gradually, then suddenly.”

Nations are built upon classical values — perseverance, self-reliance, and honor. A great nation is one whose values have made it unusually prosperous. In its latter days, the nation becomes hollowed out and burdened with a costly, top-heavy government. The middle class is expected to provide generosity to the masses. Over time, traditional values fade away, and everyone seeks to live off everyone else.

There is time for renewal. But it will be difficult and not bloodless.

Hang All the Members of the Liars’ Club?

The lying sharks swim and circle with impunity.

Federal prosecutors last week announced the indictment of U.S. Representative George Santos (R-N.Y.) on a host of charges, including misuse of federal campaign funds and wire fraud, almost all of them resulting from his pathological lies.

Certainly, Santos deserved the attention of prosecutors for lying on federal documents and affidavits that may have helped him win a congressional seat as well as personal lucre.

Biden’s false border victory

Scrapping Title 42 was a smokescreen

One has to admire the chutzpah of Kamala Harris. Less than 24 hours after Title 42 expired, there she was, merrily clinking glasses at a Democratic Party soirée in a wealthy Atlanta suburb. When a journalist asked about the possible fall-out from the termination of Trump’s pandemic policy, which swiftly turned back immigrants at the border, she was typically nonchalant. “I hear that everything in the last couple of days is going rather smoothly,” she replied. There was no mention of the 30 migrants who had been bussed to her home in Washington DC from Texas the evening before; nor of the deep misgivings expressed by officials who work on the border. Everything, you see, was going “smoothly”. Nothing to see here.

The war for your child’s soul

Why do the woke hate Ron DeSantis? Because he’s making it harder for them to control your kids.

Just when you thought the woke couldn’t get any weirder, now they want the right to cause psychological distress to your children. How else do we explain their agitation with one part in particular of Florida governor Ron DeSantis’s Stop WOKE Act – namely, the bit that forbids schoolteachers from making kids feel ‘guilt, anguish or other forms of psychological distress’ on the basis of their race, gender or national origin?

Italy floods: Bruce Springsteen gig condemned as insult to the dead

Bruce Springsteen has been criticised for going ahead with a concert in Italy near where floods have killed nine people, submerged 35 towns and caused 250 landslides this week.

The American singer’s gig for 50,000 fans on Thursday in Ferrara, about 30 miles from the epicentre of the flooding, was described by a local councillor as an insult to the “pain, desperation and difficulty” of thousands of flood evacuees.

The Hate Industry

The “anti-hate” hate industry creates the tribalism it claims to fight, and the only beneficiary of all the hate it creates is the hate industry itself.

In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, when establishment politicians started to make common use of the term “homeland,” they told us the most dangerous threat to Americans was foreign terrorists. But today, we are instructed to fear the enemy within. A new iconic date, January 6, 2021, is inscribed on our collective consciousness. From coast to coast, Americans are being herded into two camps. There are the “white supremacists,” those bad people who purportedly hate good people. And then there is everyone else, good people who are encouraged to hate the bad people.

The common thread, to state the obvious, is hate.

Supreme Court rules for Google, Twitter on terror-related content

The Supreme Court ruled for Google and Twitter in a pair of closely watched liability cases Thursday, saying families of terrorism victims had not shown the companies helped foster attacks on their loved ones.

“Plaintiffs’ allegations are insufficient to establish that these defendants aided and abetted ISIS in carrying out the relevant attack,” Justice Clarence Thomas wrote in a unanimous decision in the Twitter case. The court adopted similar reasoning in the claim against Google.

No armour, no shoes, no hope — the daily life of a Russian soldier

Russian infantry are dispatched on blind charges nicknamed ‘Zombie Waves’ across no-man’s land, running headlong into machine gun fire

With soaring casualty rates and plunging morale, Russian soldiers on Ukraine’s front line are paying a heavy price for Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade.

Aged on average between 20 and 25 years old, and typically from impoverished backgrounds, some are conscripts while others are attracted by slick online advertising and surprisingly good salaries. As Kyiv prepares to launch a major counter-offensive, what is their daily life like?

Douglas Todd: NDP goes after housing ‘profiteers’ in cabinet and big business

Analysis: “Politicians are profiteering on housing,” says the NDP’s Jenny Kwan, as Canada’s housing minister buys a second rental apartment.

It’s time to make life difficult for federal politicians and big corporations that “profiteer from housing,” says the federal NDP’s housing critic.

Liberal cabinet ministers who play the real-estate market for personal gain — and the giant housing corporations to which they have given massive tax breaks — need pushback, says Vancouver East MP Jenny Kwan.

Why does the MSM avoid discussing mass immigration’ impact on the housing shortage? Because many pols profit from it.

Last year, 62 Liberal MPs (including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau) received money from investment properties, as did 54 Conservative MPs; six Bloc Quebecois MPs, and four NDP MPs (not including leader Jagmeet Singh).
