How realistic are Russian reparation payments to Ukraine?

The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution calling on Russia to pay reparations to Ukraine for the destruction caused by its war of aggression. But it is not binding. Can Russia be held liable?

There does not yet seem to be an end in sight to the war in Ukraine. But the international community is already discussing how Russia might be forced to pay for the damage caused by its army. On November 14, a UN General Assembly resolution calling on Moscow to pay reparations received 94 votes in favor. Fourteen states voted against the resolution, and 73 abstained.

The UN doing what it does best – being useless.

US FCC bans sales, import of Communist Chinese tech from Huawei, ZTE

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. is banning the sale of communications equipment made by Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE and restricting the use of some China-made video surveillance systems, citing an “unacceptable risk” to national security.

The five-member Federal Communications Commission said Friday it has voted unanimously to adopt new rules that will block the importation or sale of certain technology products that pose security risks to U.S. critical infrastructure. It’s the latest in a years-long escalation of U.S. restrictions of Chinese technology that began with President Donald Trump and has continued under President Joe Biden’s administration.

Guess Hunter lost a deal.

Six years ago today, November 26, 2016, news broke of the death of Fidel Castro, the former communist dictator of Cuba. Castro’s communist regime executed hundreds of political opponents and drove tens of thousands more into exile. The U.S. State Department, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch all listed Castro’s Cuba as among the worst violators of human rights on the planet.

Of course nothing could top Junior’s arse licking display.

Russia firing ageing cruise missiles because stocks are depleted, MoD suggests

Russia is firing ageing cruise missiles stripped of their nuclear warheads at Ukrainian targets because Vladimir Putin’s stocks are so depleted, the Ministry of Defence has suggested.

An intelligence update from the British MoD on Saturday said the desperate improvisation by the Russian president’s struggling forces are “unlikely to achieve reliable effects”.

The evidence cited is pictures of apparently shot down AS-15 Kent air-launched cruise missiles, which were said to have been designed in the 1980s as a nuclear delivery system.

China Xinjiang: Urumqi rocked by Covid lockdown protests after deadly fire

Videos shared on social media in China have appeared to show fresh protests against Covid restrictions, after an apartment block fire killed 10 people.

People in Urumqi are seen confronting officials, breaking down a barrier and shouting “end the Covid lockdown”.

Infections have hit new highs in China in spite of a tough zero-Covid policy.

Authorities in Urumqi have now promised to phase out restrictions – though deny that these stopped people escaping Thursday’s fire.

The World Cup has shown us that virtue-signalling and virtue are not the same thing.

Two televisual events from my childhood stand out clearly in my mind: the Moon landing in 1969 and the incident at the 1968 Mexico Olympics, when – after winning the gold and bronze 200-metre medals respectively – black American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos gave Black Power salutes from the winner’s podium while the American national anthem played. My dad – a Communist and thus anti-American, but on the other hand a stickler for manners – made a singular sound somewhere between a tut and a cheer.

There are growing concerns from Iranian-Canadians who say they are being threatened, monitored and even followed at protests and outside their homes by affiliates of the Iranian regime who are here in Canada.

“They know the view out of my apartment. They said it was a school. That I have three cats. They knew the friends that have come to my house,” said Maryam Shafipour, an Iranian activist who now lives in Canada and who is speaking out against the regime despite the dangers.

Vatican says China violated pact on bishops, wants explanation

VATICAN CITY, Nov 26 (Reuters) – The Vatican on Saturday accused Chinese authorities of violating a bilateral pact on the appointment of bishops by installing one in a diocese not recognised by the Holy See.

A statement said the Vatican learned with “surprise and regret” that the bishop of another district had been installed as auxiliary, or assistant, bishop in Jiangxi.

The unauthorized installation appeared to be one of the most serious violations of a 2018 agreement between the Vatican and Beijing on the appointment of bishops.

The accord, which some Catholics have denounced as a sell-out to China’s Communist authorities, was last renewed for a two-year period in October. Its details are still secret.

Fights, guns, overdoses: Staff at York Memorial warn school on brink of crisis

Violence against adults, fights in the hallways and reports of weapons on the property. Staff at York Memorial Collegiate Institute in York say the school is in crisis, and the board isn’t doing enough.

“The expectation was, ‘Hey, show up to work and pretend as if nothing happened all through the day. Cross your fingers, hope to God that it will not happen again,’” said a staff member, whom CityNews has agreed to keep anonymous.

Fourteen of the school’s 80 staff members staged a one-day work refusal campaign due to safety issues, an unprecedented number at a single school, a union representing secondary school teachers in Toronto said.

Nearly two weeks after four University of Idaho students were found knifed to death in their off-campus home, police have still not publicly identified a suspect.

As students emptied out of the college town for Thanksgiving, investigators once again returned to the taped-off murder scene in Moscow on Friday — 13 days after Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Ethan Chapin, 20, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Madison Mogen, 21 were found stabbed to death at the house.

Trudeau embarrasses nation on Canada’s Drag Race spinoff

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made an appearance on Friday’s episode of Canada’s Drag Race: Canada vs. the World to offer the contestants words of inspiration before the main challenge.

Trudeau is touted as being the first world leader to visit the competition series founded by RuPaul.

During the episode, the prime minister shared his thoughts on Canada’s efforts to embrace diversity, noting there is a lot more work to do toward building allyship in Canada.
