John Cantlie: Ten years since IS kidnap of British journalist in Syria

Today marks 10 years since British photojournalist John Cantlie was kidnapped by Islamic State militants in Syria.

He is thought to be the only foreign hostage held by them who was neither released nor murdered on camera.

Mr Cantlie outlived other UK hostages and appeared in the group’s propaganda videos, though his fate is unknown.

He is presumed dead but his body has never been found, and his family recently held a funeral for him.

Mortgage interest costs soar at rates we haven’t seen since the 1990s — stoking fears of another crash

Canadian mortgage interest costs in October increased at a rate not seen since the 1990s housing crash, indicating troubling headwinds for the country’s real estate sector.

In October, interest costs increased year-over-year by 11.4 per cent, the biggest increase since February 1991, when it was 11.7 per cent, according to recent report from Statistics Canada.

Ottawa-based company Shopify is resisting calls to cut ties with the controversial site accused of being anti-LGBTQ2 and known as “Libs of TikTok,” which sells merchandise on the e-commerce platform plastered with allegations of “grooming” of children.

The products use the words “Stop grooming our kids,” an allegation that the Anti-Defamation League says has increasingly been deployed over the past year by some on the far right without evidence against members of the LGBTQ2 community; in particular, those who do drag.

Lawyer for ‘Freedom Convoy’ organizers kicked out of Emergencies Act inquiry

OTTAWA — A lawyer for some organizers of the so-called “Freedom Convoy” protests was ejected from the Emergencies Act inquiry on Tuesday after repeatedly interrupting the judge who is chairing the process.

Commissioner Paul Rouleau raised his voice and called on security to remove Brendan Miller, a lawyer for a charity created by protest leaders including Tamara Lich.

Miller was expressing frustration about how documents provided by the government had redactions, and demanding that a staff member in the office of Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino be called to testify.

Inaccurate news report claimed Russian missiles had strayed into a Nato member state

The Associated Press put the world on high alert last week when it reported claims by a “senior US intelligence official” that Russian missiles had killed two people in Poland.

The inaccurate news alert, which was circulated last Tuesday, prompted widespread fears of an escalation of Russia’s war beyond Ukraine’s borders as it claimed Russian missiles had strayed into a Nato member state.

Will they cancel Zelensky too? I don’t see that he has recanted his assertion that the missile was fired by the Russians.

A former Afghan platoon commander says he was doing manual labour on the Iranian island of Kish when he received a phone call. He says he listened carefully as a former comrade made a proposal: Join a new army and fight for a new cause.

That army was Russia’s, and the cause was the war against Ukraine.

The offer was for six months of training in Russia, $1,500 to $3,000 (U.S.) a month (three to six times what he’s been making in Iran) and Russian citizenship for him and his immediate family members.

China has seen its first deaths from Covid-19 in six months, and thousands more people are catching the disease, despite the government’s strict lockdown policy.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said China should rethink its strategy.

On Sunday 20 November alone, there were 26,824 new cases recorded in China. That is close to the peak back in April 2022.

OTTAWA — The RCMP worried that after arriving in Ottawa, participants in the “Freedom Convoy” would try to pinpoint Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s location, documents suggest — just as demonstrators had tried to do during last year’s election campaign.

The concerns are outlined in assessments by the national police force’s intelligence personnel that were tabled as part of evidence presented at a public inquiry probing the Trudeau government’s use of the Emergencies Act in response to last winter’s protests.

The weeks-long demonstrations, which blockaded downtown Ottawa and several border crossings, were driven by opposition to COVID-19 restrictions such as mask and vaccine requirements. Many participants voiced their opposition to the federal government in general and Trudeau himself.

Renewed questions about what Prime Minister Justin Trudeau knew about alleged Chinese interference in the 2019 federal election had Liberal cabinet ministers sticking to their prepared notes during question period on Monday.

A few queries into question period, Bloc Québécois MP Alain Therrien challenged the prime minister’s assertion on Sunday that he hadn’t been briefed on the revelations.

Those comments counter ones made by sources to Global News last month that Trudeau was informed in January that as many as eleven Liberal candidates received funding by the Chinese government.
