We’ve long used shame as an essential tool in shaping our common morality with great success. Since the fall of man, it has acted as a blunt reminder to stay the course as we grow up past childhood and enter the age of reason.

As one labour leader put it on Monday at a celebratory press conference, Mr. Ford “blinked.” He sure did. He offered what diplomats trying to end a war refer to as a return to the “status quo ante” – things as they were before the shooting started. The government promised to repeal the legislation that used the notwithstanding clause to impose a contract; the union representing 55,000 education workers agreed to end its strike so negotiations can resume.
OPP Supt. Dana Earley says she briefly considered putting off an operation to clear a blockade of protesters at the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor, Ont. fearing it might make the ongoing occupation in downtown Ottawa worse.

The idea that releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere should cost money — known as carbon pricing — sits at the center of the federal Liberals’ plan to limit climate change, and now they’re working on policies to ensure that it remains in place in Canada for years to come.
Last month, Jonathan Wilkinson, minister of natural resources, told a crowd in downtown Toronto, that the federal Liberals plan to introduce a policy to ensure carbon pricing not only remains in place through at least 2030, but also ramps up during that time, from $50 per tonne to $170 per tonne.
Wilkinson made his comments during a question-and-answer session after a speech to the Canadian Club, saying that industry won’t invest billions of dollars to reduce their carbon emissions until they have “certainty” that carbon pricing won’t be abolished under a future leader.

Russia is stepping up its efforts to build substantial obstacle barriers to slow the advance of Ukrainian forces in key locations it is defending, including around the devastated city of Mariupol, the UK Ministry of Defence has said.
Its intelligence assessment on Tuesday said the Russian military was using two plants in occupied Mariupol to produce large numbers of “dragon’s teeth” – pyramidal concrete blocks designed to slow advancing military vehicles.

Doug Ford says housing on protected Greenbelt needed due to rising immigration
Ontario Premier Doug Ford is justifying his proposal to remove land from the environmentally protected Greenbelt in order to build homes by saying the housing crisis has worsened and will become more dire because of increased immigration.
Ford says he welcomes a recent federal government announcement that it is seeking to boost immigration levels, bringing in 500,000 people in 2025.
But, he says, if hundreds of thousands of additional newcomers a year start arriving in Ontario, there isn’t going to be anywhere to house them.
The left should love him.
