While Merrick Garland’s hyper-politicized Justice Department keeps hunting for terrorists at school board meetings, real terrorism continues: San Antonio’s KSAT reported Saturday that “a Gonzales County man was sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for conspiring to provide material support to the foreign terrorist organization Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham/Syria, also known as ISIS.”

Iran is exploiting a dangerous new dynamic to acquire a nuclear bomb

As the West focuses its resources on defeating Putin’s monstrous war, other adversaries are flexing their muscles. Beijing is sending warships to circle Japan and record numbers of jets into Taiwanese airspace. In Iran, the West faces the imminent prospect of a nuclear armed adversary that would imperil our security and upend the regional order – not that you’d know it from the noises coming out of Western capitals.

Since President Biden’s inauguration, the US, along with the UK, France and Germany, has been pleading with Iran to return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action – the well-intentioned but fatally flawed nuclear agreement. Last week the latest rounds of talks began in Doha, and, like a metronome, Iran stalled progress by bringing up settled disputes. Meanwhile, its nuclear programme continues apace.

Ill Prepared for Combat, Volunteers Die in Battles Far From Home

Many of the fighters for Ukraine’s western territorial defense units were assigned benign tasks away from the fighting when they first joined. Then they were called to the front to fight.

RUDNE, Ukraine — Yurii Brukhal, an electrician by trade, did not have a very dangerous role when he volunteered for Ukraine’s territorial defense forces at the start of the war. He was assigned to make deliveries and staff a checkpoint in the relative safety of his sleepy village.

Weeks later, his unit deployed from his home in the west to a frontline battle in eastern Ukraine, the center of the fiercest fighting against Russian forces. He was killed on June 10.

Andrii Verteev, who worked in a grocery store in the village, spent the first months of the war guarding a small overpass after work and returning home to his wife and daughter at night. Then he, too, volunteered to head east. He died in battle in Luhansk, only weeks before Mr. Brukhal.

Boys and girls together, dressed in Western clothes: Teenage skaters spark scandal in Iran

Like other teenagers around the world, boys and girls in Iran celebrated International Go Skateboarding Day with a gathering. The event caused widespread controversy in the Islamic Republic of Iran when a video was shared online showing teens wearing Western-style clothing, girls with uncovered hair and the genders mixing. Five people who helped organise the event were arrested.

The girls have their hair and arms uncovered while the boys wear shorts and loose, Western-style T-shirts. They’re all chatting together in the same place, something unheard of in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

“Doc, I’m fed up waiting here for nearly a year now while you guys find a heart donor. My insurance company told me to fly to China—they’ve already scheduled a heart transplant in two weeks.”

After processing what he’d heard, Jay responded: “Do you hear yourself? How can anyone promise you a donor heart on a specific date ahead of time? You understand that somebody must die on the very same day that you will undergo this surgery, don’t you?”

Military didn’t have capacity to clear Coutts, Alta. blockade “without significant risk”: government doc

The Canadian Armed Forces didn’t have the “assets” to safely help clear the blockade in Coutts, Alta. earlier this year, while the Alberta government had the authority to deal with the problem itself under provincial legislation, Public Safety Canada told the emergency preparedness minister.

The briefing note was prepared by the department for Bill Blair in February, and obtained by the National Post through Access to Information. It was reacting to a letter from the Alberta government, asking for federal government help to clear the blockade at the border crossing in Coutts that began in support of the Freedom Convoy protests in Ottawa.

The White House appears to be blaming the horrid deaths discovered in San Antonio on Trump and a “closed” border.

After a tractor-trailer packed with more than 60 migrants was found abandoned in San Antonio, reporters pressed White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre for a reaction. As of this writing, 53 have been declared dead.

En route to Madrid with President Joe Biden, Jean-Pierre rightly called the awful story “absolutely horrific and heartbreaking.” She then added, “The border is closed, which is in part why you see people trying to make this dangerous journey using smuggling networks.”

Mickey Mouse could soon leave Disney as 95-year copyright expiry nears

As a consequence of US copyright law, entertainment giant Disney could soon lose the exclusive rights to some of the characters most responsible for the brand’s universal recognition, including the mouse that acts as its mascot.

Mickey Mouse will enter the public domain in the year 2024, almost 95 years after his creation on 1 October 1928 – the length of time after which the copyright on an anonymous or pseudo-anonymous body of artistic work expires.

The RCMP’s recent discovery of thousands of counterfeit toonies has raised concerns about the integrity of Canada’s banking system, through which they circulated with apparent ease.

It also raises a question: Why would anyone counterfeit the lowly toonie? The seized fakes seem to contradict the prevailing wisdom about counterfeiting: Since high denomination notes involve about the same amount of labour and input costs as low-value coins, $50 and $100 bills are far more attractive targets for fakery than toonies.

While Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping are marketing their authoritarian rules as alternatives to a “moribund” Western democratic system, the Khomeinist mullahs in Tehran are also throwing their hat, sorry turban, into the ring as contenders for leading a New World Order.

An early version of the mullahs’ bid came almost 30 years ago, when Hojat al-Islam Muhammad Khatami suggested that, by separating religion from politics, the Renaissance and Enlightenment in Europe had created a world order that fomented wars, slavery and colonialism. The way to salvation was to restore religious control of politics by granting theologians a role in the leadership.
