Nearly 40 Trucking Businesses Involved in Canada’s Freedom Convoy Protests Have Been Shut Down

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) confirmed that it shut down nearly 40 businesses during its crackdown on Freedom Convoy protesters opposing COVID-19 mandates and restrictions.

In an email to Global News on Feb. 23, Dakota Brasier, a spokesperson for Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney, said the ministry had issued 12 seizure orders to Ontario-based large truck operators which suspended them from being allowed to operate within Canada.

The ministry also issued an order to seize all plates registered to them, Brasier said.

There’s an old axiom that military plans never survive the first contact with the enemy. It certainly appears to be true for Russia’s forces in Ukraine.

Ed Arnold, an expert on European security at the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi), describes Russia’s initial assault as “underwhelming” and “slower than expected”.

Jussie Smollett files for a new trial after taking issue with jury selection that screened out people who would believe outrageous bullshit

Jussie Smollett’s legal team have filed documents to request a new trial unless the judge reverses the verdict and finds him not guilty of disorderly conduct for faking the police report, according to TMZ.

The actor requested the new trial two months after he was found guilty by the jurors of five of the six felony charges against him.

The outlet reported that Jussie claimed his constitutional rights were violated after his legal team was blocked from participating in the juror selection process.

A team of researchers at Cambridge University’s Centre for the Future of Democracy recently came to some counterintuitive findings.

Using a massive dataset from 27 countries and 81,857 survey respondents, the team suggested the COVID-19 pandemic may have halted the rise of populism and populist leaders across the world. Political polarization over the period appears to have declined — a populist leader’s mishandling of the pandemic led to an average 10 percentage point drop in approval rating.

Close to two thirds of Americans believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not have invaded Ukraine if Trump were still president, according to a new survey released Friday.

A recent Harvard Center for American Political Studies-Harris Poll survey revealed that 62 percent of those Americans polled felt that Putin would not be launching an offense against Ukraine if Trump, rather than incumbent President Joe Biden, was still in office. Broken down, 39 percent of Democrats and 85 percent of Republicans believe that Trump would have made Putin think twice about launching the war.

Nearly half of Canadians say their impressions of Trudeau have worsened over convoy protest response: poll

The Nanos Research survey found that just 20 per cent of Canadians said their impressions of Mr. Trudeau improved over his government’s response to the demonstrations, while 31 per cent said it had no impact and 2 per cent said they were unsure.

The poll, commissioned by The Globe and Mail, also revealed a gender divide in the opinions of the Prime Minister, with 51 per cent of men saying their impressions of Mr. Trudeau worsened, compared to 42 per cent of women.

“What’s clear from the survey is that even though Canadians generally support what the Prime Minister has done, his personal brand has taken a hit as result of truckers’ convoy protest,” said pollster Nik Nanos in an interview. “There’s no political windfall for Justin Trudeau coming out of … implementing the Emergencies Act.”

Ontario reports less than 1,100 COVID-19 hospitalizations for third straight day

Ontario reported 34 more COVID-19 related deaths and less than 1,100 people hospitalized with the virus for a third straight day on Saturday.

The Ministry of Health says 31 of the deaths occurred in the past month and three additional deaths were added to the cumulative death total.

There have been 12,420 virus-related deaths since March 2020.

Masks still a ‘fundamental layer of protection,’ Canada’s top doctor says

“Whether your jurisdiction requires it or not or whether your setting requires it or not, it’s something you can do to protect yourself and others,” Dr. Theresa Tam, the country’s chief public health officer, said during a press conference Friday.

Provinces nationwide, including Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, have begun lifting pandemic restrictions, with the latter removing mask mandates as of March 15.

I believe nothing Tam says, she has been wrong or simply lied from day one.

Battle for Kyiv as Ukrainians attempt to hold off Russian forces

Fierce fighting broke out in Kyiv as Russian forces tried to push their way towards the city centre from multiple directions in the early hours of Saturday, and as the Ukrainian president, Volodomyr Zelenskiy, bluntly rejected a US offer to evacuate him from the country’s capital.

“The fight is here,” Zelinskiy said. By 8am, however, residents were reporting a lull in the attack as it appeared Kyiv’s defenders had held out against another night of Russian advances from multiple directions, including both north and south of the main western route from Zhitomyr to Kyiv, and in the area of the motorway towards the country’s south.

Ukraine invasion: Russians close in on Kyiv but meet strong resistance

Russian assaults on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv have been met with fierce resistance, as the Ukrainian military says it fought off several attacks.

The military said in a Facebook post early on Saturday that an army unit managed to repel Russian forces near its base on a major city street.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said: “The occupiers wanted to block the centre of our state… We broke their plan.”

Meanwhile, fighting continues near several other Ukrainian cities.

Naturally, fingers quickly pointed towards Moscow – Russia’s cyber army once again accused of hacking to spread fear and confusion online as troops massed on Ukraine’s borders.
