Ontario reported 60 new deaths due to COVID-19 on Wednesday – the highest daily death toll reported in nearly a year – as overall hospital admissions fell and ICU occupancy increased only slightly.

COVID-19 detected for first time in Ontario wildlife

Samples taken from five free-ranging white-tailed deer in southwestern Ontario have tested positive for COVID-19, marking the first time the virus has been detected in the province’s wildlife.

In an email to CTV News Toronto, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry said the samples were taken in November by way of the ministry’s chronic wasting disease surveillance program.

That was Matt DeSarno, FBI special agent in charge, after the hostage incident in Colleyville, Texas, on Saturday. It was bizarre statement, as Robert Spencer noted, because the hostage-taker’s demands revolved around imprisoned jihadist Aafia Siddiqui, also known as “Lady al Qaeda.”  The FBI knew that but was “continuing to work to find motive.” It was as though the Great Brinks Robbery of 1950 left the FBI gasping in bewilderment.

‘With the queen’s approval and agreement’, read Buckingham Palace’s official statement, ‘the Duke of York’s military affiliations and royal patronages have been returned to the queen’. And with that, Prince Andrew was stripped of his royal garb. All the titles, including His Royal Highness, were gone and, according to the statement, never to return.

Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch has refused to wear a mask in court despite pleas from Chief Justice John Roberts, according to a report.

Last fall, amid a decline in Covid-19 cases, the court resumed in-person arguments for the first time, and none chose to wear a mask except Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who is 67 and has diabetes.

But earlier this month when the court returned to the bench following the Omicron surge over the holidays, Sotomayor made it clear she did not feel safe in close proximity with the others unless they were masked, according to NPR.

First-ever felony charges filed against driver in fatal Autopilot-involved crash

A Tesla limo driver has become the first person to face felony charges in the US for vehicular manslaughter with a partially-automated driving system. His car ran a red light and hit another vehicle, killing both passengers.

Kevin George Aziz Riad was charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter after his Autopilot-enabled Tesla Model S ran a red light at high speed and struck a Honda Civic at an intersection in the Los Angeles suburb of Gardena in December 2019. Both passengers of the Honda died at the scene, while Riad and his passenger were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Ray Epps to sit for transcribed interview with Jan. 6 committee

Ray Epps, the Arizona man at the center of claims that FBI informants provoked the Capitol riot, is scheduled to sit down for a transcribed interview with the Jan. 6 House select committee Friday.

The select committee disclosed last Tuesday that Epps told them during an interview in November that he had no involvement with the FBI or any other law enforcement agency before, during, or after the Capitol riot. Epps’s lawyer, John Blischak, told Politico that the meeting was merely a precursor for the more formal transcribed interview scheduled to take place Friday.

Authorities in Hong Kong will euthanize some 2,000 hamsters and other small animals after a minor COVID-19 outbreak was linked to a pet shop in the city.

Speaking at a news conference Tuesday, Secretary for Food and Health Sophia Chan said preliminary testing had returned positive results for a number of animals at the Little Boss pet shop in Causeway Bay, after a 23-year-old employee tested positive for the Delta variant Sunday.

US faces wave of omicron deaths in coming weeks, models say

The fast-moving omicron variant may cause less severe disease on average, but COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. are climbing and modelers forecast 50,000 to 300,000 more Americans could die by the time the wave subsides in mid-March.

The seven-day rolling average for daily new COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. has been trending upward since mid-November, reaching nearly 1,700 on Jan. 17 — still below the peak of 3,300 in January 2021. COVID-19 deaths among nursing home residents started rising slightly two weeks ago, although still at a rate 10 times less than last year before most residents were vaccinated.

Scientists, the experts we rely on to tell us how to live our lives, have been studying privilege and inequality among squirrels and other animals, according to the New York Times.

It all began as a conversation among behavioral ecologists at UCLA: “They saw how COVID-19 was highlighting health disparities and other inequalities around the world,” the Times reports. “The scientists began to wonder if they could learn more about inequality by studying it in animals.”

Father of UCLA student, 24, stabbed to death by homeless man chokes up as he slams woke politicians for ‘bestowing favor on people who rob others of their rights’

The father of slain UCLA student Brianna Kupfer has revealed that his 24-year-old daughter was not supposed to be working on the day she was stabbed in cold-blood inside a high-end furniture store – and he laid some blame for her death on politicians and their skewed priorities.

‘I blame what’s endemic in our society right now, is that everybody seems to be oriented on giving back rights and bestowing favor on people that rob others of their rights,’ Todd Kupfer told Fox News.

Kupfer said he is not blaming any politicians by name, but he argued that their job is ‘to make communities better, to make people care more, not to tear down communities by exposing them to people that are falling out the bottom, that really don’t care about other human beings and just think they can do whatever they like in our society.’
