Judge awards $150,000 in legal costs to ex-bureaucrat accused in $11M COVID-19 fraud

A provincial bureaucrat fired after the alleged theft of $11 million in COVID-19 relief aid has been awarded $150,000 in legal costs by an Ontario court.

…. Madan was fired in the fall of 2020 as the $176,608-a-year computer leader on the Ministry of Education’s Support for Families initiative.

That program gave Ontario parents $200 per child under age 12 and $250 per child and youth under 21 with special needs to help with online schooling expenses early in the pandemic.

Last January, in civil court testimony that may not be used in the criminal case if it violates Charter-protected rights against self-incrimination, Madan admitted he “relaxed” computer security safeguards on the “free-flowing program” so additional payouts could be made to the same bank accounts.

“I thought there may be an opportunity to take the funds out … it looked like easy money for me,” he testified.

Fishermen hit jackpot thanks to ‘foreign’ spy drones – reports

Eleven fishermen and five “related personnel” reaped the rewards of their vigilance on Monday – quite literally – with authorities in China’s Jiangsu Province remunerating them generously for capturing a total of 10 “suspicious foreign devices with spying functions in Chinese territorial waters since 2020.” According to China’s state-affiliated Global Times outlet, upon technical investigation all 10 drones turned out be foreign-made and “posing a threat to national security.”

The family of a Marine killed in Afghanistan during the Biden administration’s chaotic troop withdrawal has sued Alec Baldwin for defamation, claiming the actor falsely accused the serviceman’s grieving relatives of being insurrectionists.

Rylee McCollum, 20, of Wyoming, was one of 13 US service members killed in the Aug. 26 bombing outside the Abbey Gate of Hamid Karzai International Airport, where they were processing would-be evacuees to be flown out of Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover.

All plan B Covid restrictions, including mask wearing, to end in England

Boris Johnson has announced the end of all Covid measures introduced to combat the Omicron variant – compulsory mask-wearing on public transport and in shops, guidance to work from home and vaccine certificates – from next week.

The prime minister also told the Commons that the legal requirement on people with coronavirus to self-isolate would be allowed to lapse when the regulations expired on 24 March, and that date could be brought forward.

To cheers from some on the Conservative benches, Johnson announced an immediate end to the need for pupils to wear masks at secondary schools.

Not One Corpse Has Been Found In The ‘Mass Grave’ Of Indigenous Children In Canada

Remember last summer when a mass grave containing the remains of hundreds of children was found on the grounds of a former government boarding school for indigenous children in British Columbia, Canada?

In the seven months since this shocking news broke, not one body has been found, and not a single shovel-full of dirt has been excavated from the site in question. Contrary to the worldwide media coverage last summer, nothing, in fact, has been “discovered” on the grounds of the Kamloops Indian Residential School.

The NDP says it is working with the ethics commissioner and intends to file a formal disclosure report on a $1,895 rocking chair given to NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh’s wife in exchange for posting about the item on her Instagram account.

On Dec. 10, Singh’s wife posted an image of the Grand Jackson Rocker by Canadian furniture company Monte Design on her Instagram account, mentioning the company. The party said Singh would repay the cost of the chair after CBC reported it was given to him and his wife as a gift.

I recently resigned from my position as full tenured professor at the University of Toronto. I am now professor emeritus, and before I turned sixty. Emeritus is generally a designation reserved for superannuated faculty, albeit those who had served their term with some distinction. I had envisioned teaching and researching at the U of T, full time, until they had to haul my skeleton out of my office. I loved my job. And my students, undergraduates and graduates alike, were positively predisposed toward me. But that career path was not meant to be. There were many reasons, including the fact that I can now teach many more people and with less interference online.

Canada’s inflation rate rises to new 30-year high of 4.8%

The Consumer Price Index increased at an annual pace of 4.8 per cent in December, as food and energy led to the cost of living going up at its fastest rate since 1991.

Statistics Canada reported Wednesday that grocery prices increased by 5.7 per cent, the biggest annual gain since 2011.

The increase in the inflation rate was in line with expectations. For comparison purposes, the United States currently has an inflation rate of seven per cent, its highest since 1982.
