Hospitalizations are rising thanks to Omicron, but future impact is uncertain: experts

Unprecedented levels of COVID-19 across Canada are driving hospitalizations as well and once again threatening many provincial health-care systems.

Yet experts say it’s too soon to say how much hospitalizations could grow in the days and weeks to come. With testing capacity at its breaking point and data still coming in on Omicron’s severity, they say modelling this latest wave will require updating their methodology.

“We’re flying blind,” said Caroline Colijn, a mathematics professor at Simon Fraser University who has been modelling the pandemic in British Columbia.

Government emails obtained by CBC News shed new light on public anger over former premier Mike Harris’s controversial 2021 appointment to the Order of Ontario.

Established in 1986, the province’s highest honour is reserved for those whose “excellence has left a lasting legacy” in the fields of arts, education, business, law and public service, according to the Ministry of Sport, Tourism and Culture. Nominations are announced every New Year’s Day.

Harris, 76, was Conservative premier from 1995 to 2002. His agenda of sweeping change left a lasting legacy, but the nature of that legacy is still hotly debated by supporters and detractors alike, highlighting a political divide almost two decades later.

…. Going forward the Ford government has indicated that it will only provide publicly-funded PCR testing to certain high-risk individuals in a bid to ensure that those who need a test the most can get timely access to one.

That, however, will mean that the daily case counts will no longer be a reflection of community spread in the weeks to come.

“I don’t think we’ll have any real idea of the true community burden,” infectious disease specialist Dr. Isaac Bogoch conceded during an interview with CP24 on Friday. “We will be in the dark in terms of knowing what the true burden of infection is in the community.”

Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario’s chief medical officer, said that line more than once during his Thursday press conference.

Firefighters on Thursday night were trying their best to preserve homes in the line of a fast-moving wildfire, which has shocked the state at a time when the ground should usually be thick with December snow.

The Marshall Fire, just south of Boulder, was sparked by extreme winds gusting over 100mph, which knocked down power lines and sparked a fire.

Officials on Thursday night confirmed that at least 580 homes had been lost – making the Marshall Fire the most devastating destruction of property in state history.

A recent study by the Cato Institute, the libertarian think tank, ranked California 48th out of the 50 states in personal and economic freedom. The study also examines fiscal policy and regulatory policy. For the first time, California’s population decreased last year, resulting in the loss of a congressional seat. In the third quarter of this year, 150,000 more people on average left the state versus 60,000 net departures in the first quarter of last year. Between March 2020 and September 2021, there has been a 38% decrease in new arrivals. California has 58 counties, and new arrivals fell in every single one.

We are regularly treated to surveys of public opinion about Canada’s 1982 Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Canadians love it, though the vast majority have never read it. Not a word. The real story of the Charter, the reasons for it, and its political and moral consequences are widely ignored.

Prior to our founding, settlers in the colonies that became Canada lived under English law according to English Parliamentary legislation and common-law precedent. Laws made by Parliament were considered the voice of the people, even—Vox Populi, Vox Dei—as the voice of God, and therefore the “supreme law” of the land. This is still the case in England, which to this day has no written Charter or Constitution. The federal case against an Antifa rioter from Portland accused of assaulting police officers was dropped after she completed just 30 hours of community service.

Eva Warner, who is transgender and was formerly named Joshua, was charged with felony civil disorder in September 2020 after she was arrested three times during Antifa riots in August.

Warner, 26, would have faced a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison if convicted.

Ontario updates COVID-19 testing guidance; cuts isolation period from 10 to 5 days for fully vaccinated residents

Ontario is updating its COVID-19 testing requirements and cutting the isolation period from 10 to five days for fully vaccinated residents, while also limiting publicly-funded tests to high-risk individuals only.

On Thursday, Ontario’s top doctor announced an update to the province’s testing and isolation guidance amid record-high cases counts due to the rapidly spreading Omicron variant.

Beginning on Friday, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests offered by the province will only be available for high-risk individuals who are symptomatic and/or at risk of severe illness from the coronavirus, instead of being widely available to anyone looking for a test.
