‘Most dangerous period that we’ve been in’: Carney urged to bolster ‘Team Canada’ approach ahead of CUSMA review

With Canada entering into a pivotal review of its North American trade deal in the new year, the kind of unified support for Ottawa’s position which was seen during the NAFTA renegotiations has yet to take shape, says a member of the prime minister’s Council on Canada-United States Relations.

Prime Minister Mark Carney (Nepean, Ont.) and Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc (Beauséjour, N.B.) have conducted trade talks with the Americans without broad engagement from opposition parties or consultations across Canadian society.

At Windsor’s Titan Tool and Die, workers fight an outsourcing push

At the end of March, tensions erupted at Titan Tool and Die, an auto parts company with operations in Windsor and nearby Warren, Mich.

On the Canadian side, unionized workers tried to block the company from shipping products to the United States. Titan, which makes custom stamping tools used to shape vehicles, wanted to rush those products across the border ahead of imminent U.S. tariffs targeting the auto industry.

US offered Ukraine 15-year security guarantee, Zelensky says

The US has offered Ukraine security guarantees for 15 years, Volodymyr Zelensky has said, during talks on a revised peace plan with Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday.

The US president said an agreement on this point was “close to 95%” done, but Ukraine’s leader has since said he would like guarantees for up to 50 years.

President Zelensky outlined territorial issues and the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant as the last unresolved matters, with little said on the future of Ukraine’s contested Donbas region.

Poilievre on ‘challenging year’ and what lies ahead

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre paused when asked how he’d describe the last year.

He was speaking with The Globe and Mail as part of a run of year-end interviews, many of which focused on the news of the two MPs who quit his party and joined Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals.

The surprise defections brought the minority Liberals to within one seat of a majority, and no one knows for certain whether another MP will go and if they do, whether Mr. Poilievre can remain as leader.

Well relocating his seat to Alberta may turn out for the best.

DC pipe bomb suspect Brian Cole Jr.’s possible motive revealed: ‘Something just snapped’

DC pipe-bomb suspect Brian Cole Jr. told authorities he wanted to “speak up” for people who believed the 2020 election was stolen and target the country’s political parties for being “in charge” after his arrest earlier this month, prosecutors said Sunday.

Cole, 30, told agents that “something just snapped” in him before he allegedly placed two pipe bombs by the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters on the eve of the Jan. 6 riots, according to a newly filed Justice Department memo.

Jimmy Kimmel: Fake Progressive Hero Of The Year

That Jimmy Kimmel morphed from a fat, whiny side-kick to Adam Carolla into a less-fat, whinier leftist whose second wife neutered him and keeps his testicles in a Mason jar under the stairs should surprise no one. Fat dudes, even after they lose the weight, always remain fat in their heads and act fat for the rest of their lives. And Jimmy Kimmel acts fat – both the victim of society’s bulk judgment, and the perp of stuffing his face, figuratively. This self-martyrdom makes him the perfect progressive hero.

Cory Morgan: Canada Faces Unprecedented Challenges to Its Unity in 2026

The future of Canada’s federation will be a top issue in 2026. An independence referendum is all but assured to be held in Alberta next fall while independence groups are organizing in Saskatchewan and pressuring the Scott Moe government to allow a provincial referendum. In Quebec, the Parti Québécois (PQ) is strongly favoured to win in a fall election by campaigning on holding another referendum on independence.

Canada’s unity is in question, and if citizens in all parts of the country don’t address it in the next year, the secession of a province could become a reality.

Shaking and tearful, child brides are big business in Iraq

Ruweida, a bridal make-up artist in Sadr City, says her clients this year were “almost entirely children”

Dozens of baby-faced schoolgirls drift through worn, neon-lit shops on “bridal boulevard” in Baghdad’s Sadr City wearing black abayas soon to be traded for puffball wedding gowns picked by their mothers.

Among them is 12-year-old Amani*, who is due to meet her 17-year-old fiancé for the first time on their wedding night — a betrothal arranged, according to relatives, “without the need for her permission” because, despite her tiny, shaking frame engulfed in an adult-sized tulle gown, she has reached puberty and her marriage was approved by a local cleric.
