This essay is written from the point of view of a physician, medical educator, and bioethicist who sees the deplorable fact of physician involvement in the Shoah as an opportunity to highlight enduring moral lessons for the medical professions. Medicine and law are intimately connected to one another, and, since the professionalization of medicine in the United States and Europe in the latter half of the 19th century, even more so. One discipline that connects both is moral philosophy; for both law and medicine involve reason and the will, directed toward the good of the person. Thus, the story of the Holocaust is a tragedy that unfolded because of the corruption of moral philosophy first, and medicine and law second.

If society is taken to be inherently oppressive, the notion of a common good disappears

The HBO series Succession depicts the dynastic dramas of a family-controlled media company, headed by patriarch Logan Roy in a spirit of vigorous tyranny. This clan is ultra-rich and totally amoral. One of the sons, the dissolute and aptly named Roman (played by Kieran Culkin) is gleefully immoral, skewering the petty decencies of “normal people” with lines that make you wince and laugh out loud at the same time. It is a delicious depiction of aristocratic license that would be recognisable to observers of the senatorial class in late-empire Rome, or the court of Louis XVI. To watch the show is to take an hour-long break from the relentless moralism of contemporary life and watch power operate with bald-faced corruption, rather than self-righteous bullshit. It’s refreshing that way.

The Roy family occupies the most rarefied level of globe-trotting oligarchs. Dropping down a rung or two on the pyramid of power, consider the moral ecology inhabited by the broader gentility: the salaried decision-makers and ideas-managers who service the global arrangement from various departments of the ideological apparatus. They may work in NGOs, the governing bodies of the EU, corporate journalism, HR departments, the celebrity-industrial complex, the universities, Big Tech, etc. They, too, enjoy a kind of freedom, but it is decidedly not that of the high-spirited criminals depicted in Succession. So far from living “beyond good and evil”, this broader class of cosmopolitans asserts its freedom through its moralism, precisely. In particular, they have broken free of the claims of allegiance made upon them by the particular communities they emerge from.

I think he’s figured it out.

Let’s start with one certainty: The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) should not be training China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in winter warfare tactics, particularly on Canadian soil. Period.

That’s the scandal in the revelation this week by online news site Rebel News and by the Globe and Mail that elements of the Trudeau government were at odds with one another over whether to cancel joint training exercises between the CAF and PLA at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa, near Ottawa, in the winter of 2019.

Gabe Johnson, co-founder and director of the Coalition to Save Portland, made another trip today to Portland’s Red House Autonomous Zone to try to continue the discussions he’s had in liaisons with the occupying group. He brought two guests from his attorney’s office with him to show them what’s going on at the site of the Red House. People inside the zone refused to speak with him. Johnson says the tensions inside the zone have increased “one hundred fold.” He says he and his guests were quickly surrounded by what he described as armed militia members with loaded Glocks and billy clubs. The security force told him, “We could have 3,000 motherf***ers down here in a minute if they needed to.”

The president of the CBC lives in Brooklyn, New York, according to a report by Canadaland, the online news site.

The report says Catherine Tait lives with her husband in a $5.4 million home in Brooklyn. Canadaland reports that Tait has been travelling between New York and her home in Ottawa over the course of the coronavirus crisis.

Why am I not surprised? Because being lied to and shit on by the Trudeau government is the “new normal.”

I’d like to say it is a cash grab, I’d like to say that it was craven politics, but Justin Trudeau’s decision to announce a massive hike in the carbon tax in the middle of an economic recession caused by a global pandemic is much more than that — it’s religion.

Whatever faith Trudeau was raised with or experienced as a child, his true religion now is climate change. Someone concerned about climate change but also cognizant of the fact people are suffering job losses, that businesses big and small have been crippled, might have decided to hold off on raising the carbon tax by 566% over the next ten years.

Alexandria, VA: A few days ago, I got an email from an American friend that read: “Canada is turning into our Nepal.” He included a link to an article about how Canada had allowed members of the PLA to observe the Canadian military’s winter survival training on a Canadian military base in 2018.

His point was Canada, my homeland, was becoming dangerously compliant to China.
