Company building Toronto’s new electric ferries faces criminal corruption charges overseas

The shipbuilder awarded $92 million to construct Toronto’s two new electric ferries will soon face trial overseas on corruption charges and sanctions violations, a legal threat experts say could imperil the company.

The Netherlands Public Prosecution Service announced in April that it was prosecuting Damen, a major international shipbuilder headquartered in the Netherlands, for bribery, forgery and money-laundering. The service also said it was investigating the company for violating Russian sanctions.

I bet these will work great mid-winter.

Zohran Mamdani’s victory should terrify the Democrats

There was no defeat to be snatched from the jaws of victory.

The man who shockingly secured the Democratic nomination in June has un-shockingly won the election. Zohran Mamdani, the dimpled, wise-cracking democratic socialist, will become mayor of New York, America’s most populous city.

For those with a taste for 11th-hour upsets in politics, there was little reason to anticipate a surprise. The Mamdani campaign carried the momentum from its primary battle, drawing the highest turnout in a New York mayoral race since the 1960s.

The Liberal government’s plans for CBC/Radio-Canada include looking at getting Canada into the Eurovision international song contest.

A line in the new federal budget’s section on CBC says the government is working with the public broadcaster to explore participation in the popular song contest.

Security Costs Shut Down Germany’s Christmas Markets

Several German towns have canceled their traditional Christmas markets this year, pointing to the mounting costs of new security requirements introduced after a series of terror attacks. Local organizers argue that they are unable to comply with the government’s anti-terror measures, such as installing barriers, setting up surveillance systems, and posting additional guards, all of which have become prerequisites for hosting public events.

Jamie Sarkonak: Carney’s budget is more subtle on wokeness, but the agenda is still strong

Tuesday’s budget wasn’t like those of the high Trudeau years, encrusted with identity politics at every turn. But the spirit of the old regime lives on under Prime Minister Mark Carney, who has opted for a deficit of $78.3 billion along with the continuation of social justice programs and diversity mandates.

This year, one-time “investments” are numerous. The federal anti-racism secretariat — the entity that spurred a government-wide clampdown on forced diversity and hiring quotas in Ottawa in 2021, in response to the Black Lives Matter movement — is getting $2 million in 2025-26, and nothing else after that. The Canadian Heritage program for DEI in sport is getting $8 million in 2025-26, and, again, nothing afterwards.

Why is Ofcom trying to censor Americans?

When Preston Byrne received a demand from Ofcom for £20,000 last month, he printed it off, put it through the shredder and turned it into bedding for his pet hamster.

The lawyer, who is representing US messageboard 4chan in its legal wrangling with Ofcom, even publicly poked fun at Britain’s communications quango, telling it that his hamster – Mr Whiskers – said the letter ‘smelled of failure’.

U.S. Government Was Aware of Massive Chinese Fentanyl Seizure in Vancouver Long Before Ottawa Disclosure: Source

VANCOUVER — Border officers at Vancouver International Airport have intercepted more than half a tonne of cocaine and methamphetamine bound for Australia, a near record-breaking haul that underscores the deepening role of British Columbia as an export hub in global drug trafficking.

According to the Canada Border Services Agency, officers discovered 560 kilograms of narcotics concealed within a shipment of car parts during a September 3 inspection. The cache included 319 kilograms of cocaine packed into 300 compressed powder bricks and 241 kilograms of methamphetamine sealed in 110 vacuum-packed bundles.

Was Tommy Robinson a victim of unfair policing?

Was Tommy Robinson a victim of unfair policing?

Tommy Robinson’s acquittal this morning on a charge under the Terrorism Act 2000 is significant not just legally, but as a matter of principle. More than that, it poses thorny questions about border security.

Last year, the activist was stopped at the Channel Tunnel terminal in Folkestone under the Counter Terrorism and Border Security Act. Alleging that Robinson was being evasive when questioned, carrying a large quantity of cash, and driving a car not registered under his name, officers ordered him to provide the PIN to his telephone. Robinson refused. This, the prosecution argued, constituted an offence under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act. The defence suggested it was an example of police overreach, and “a fishing expedition”. Former MP George Galloway was stopped by police at Gatwick last month under the same legislation after visiting Moscow.

Once again, Mark Carney doesn’t quite live up to the hype

Mark Carney may have to do another prime-time TV address.

Two weeks ago, the prime minister warned the nation of sacrifices to come in the big budget his government unveiled on Tuesday. But which Canadians will be feeling those sacrifices — beyond the public servants whose jobs will be cut — remains a story still untold.

So too is the question of whether this budget can survive a confidence vote in the House of Commons.
