A narrow majority of Canadians are open to paying more to help Canada cut its greenhouse gas emissions, according to a new poll from Nanos Research.
The survey comes amid a federal election campaign in which, for the first time in more than a decade, all of the major parties are proposing some form of a price on carbon as part of their election platform. But the level of the carbon price, how it is rebated back to Canadians and the stringency of emissions-reduction targets vary widely between the Liberals, Conservatives, NDP and Green Party.
Overall, the poll shows that 27 per cent of Canadians are willing to pay more in areas like taxes and the price of gas to help the country hit its emissions targets. A further 27 per cent said they were somewhat willing to pay more. However, 30 per cent said they were not willing to pay more, 14 per cent said they were somewhat unwilling and two per cent said they were unsure.
Same story at CTV as they and the Globe commissioned the poll.
I don’t have a lot of faith in this poll, it’s a hybrid telephone/online sample. People tell pollsters what they think they want to hear and online polls are meaningless.
The poll consisted of a hybrid telephone and online random survey of 1,029 Canadians. The results were gathered between Aug. 28 and 30. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
Liberal MP Bill Blair was asked a pretty basic question about gun control on Saturday morning and couldn’t, or should I say wouldn’t, answer.

Below – Is this any different than Ontario’s LCBO’s allowing non-traditional shoppers in Toronto to walk out with gallons of booze? This is the fate of every “liberal progressive” city.

In light of the prime minister showing no previous intent to protect the young from soaring prices, it is stunning to see him now act like a white knight taking on an unjust real-estate system.

A handful of provinces have introduced COVID-19 vaccine passports in the midst of a federal election, which means unvaccinated individuals could be prevented from fully engaging in our democracy.
It’s a feature not a bug.

Liberal MP Raj Saini drops out of re-election campaign following misconduct allegations
Raj Saini, a Liberal candidate in Ontario, says he will no longer be running in Canada’s 2021 federal election, following allegations that he harassed a former member of his staff. Saini has firmly denied the allegations.
In a statement Saturday, Saini confirmed he has taken “the painful decision” to end his campaign for the 44th Parliament.
They have a lot of depth – Marwan Tabbara is not seeking re-election in Kitchener South—Hespeler

Bleary-eyed and almost gasping for air, I can confirm to the 99.9 per cent of Canadians who don’t read the platforms of political parties at the onset of an election campaign that they are not missing a great deal in profound thought, stylish composition, or uplifting incitements to patriotic exaltation of the soul. I did not go beyond the Liberals and Conservatives because they are the only parties that have any chance of forming a government, and in any case I protest against the exclusion from the debates of Maxime Bernier who is probably the most impressive of the party leaders and has the best program in many respects. He is being discriminated against by the debates commission.

MONTREAL, Sept 3 (Reuters) – Canada’s Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau finds himself behind in polls ahead of a snap election he called hoping his management of the COVID-19 crisis would propel him to victory.
Trudeau called the Sept. 20 election last month, two years ahead of schedule. At the time, his Liberals were well ahead and looked likely to regain the majority in parliament they lost in 2019. His main rival, Conservative leader Erin O’Toole, has repeatedly attacked him for calling a vote during the pandemic.
The latest polls by Nanos, Ekos and others show Liberal fortunes have faded as voters have grown fatigued with Trudeau, 49, who has been in power since 2015. One Liberal strategist said on Friday the early-vote call had backfired as it was seen as “wrong” and “greedy” by electors.

A massive sense of entitlement to other people’s money…
The Canada Council for the Arts should follow in step with Ireland’s Arts and Culture Recovery Taskforce, heed the recommendations from some of Canada’s largest municipal arts councils and move to establish an Unconditional Basic Income (UBI) for all artists. This would provide the foundation artists need to take creative risks which don’t also happen to jeopardize their material security.

OTTAWA—The far-right People’s Party of Canada could have more national support than the federal Green party, according to an analysis of polling data for the ongoing election campaign.
The analysis, which is dubbed The Signal and conducted for the Star by Vox Pop Labs, shows the People’s Party with 4.5 per cent support nationally, compared with 3.4 per cent for the Greens.
Based on that, the Signal forecasts for the first time that the People’s Party could win one seat in the House of Commons: the Quebec riding of Beauce, where People’s Party Leader Maxime Bernier is running in a “toss up” race with the local Conservative incumbent.
Ooo! “Far-Right”
O’Toole and Singh rising, but Trudeau still seen as best pick for PM this election: poll
The results also suggest Trudeau continues to face skepticism from the Canadian public. He’s still seen as the leader most likely to say anything to get elected, at 46 per cent — up two points over the past two weeks — while 36 per cent said he has a hidden agenda, also higher than any other leader.

‘The Liberals’ plan essentially is to do nothing to get off the runaway-spending train and borrow forever. And that’s a reckless plan.’

Speaking in Montreal, where there have been several high-profile shootings over the summer, O’Toole says a Conservative government would make it easier for prosecutors to prove that people accused of crimes are members of criminal organizations.

The poll, which was conducted by Nanos Research and sponsored by The Globe and Mail and CTV, asked respondents: “Would you say that the current federal election is necessary, somewhat necessary, somewhat not necessary, or not necessary?”

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole directly contradicted his own party’s platform at the French-language debate on Thursday night and again Friday morning, saying he wouldn’t repeal a Liberal ban on assault rifles — despite his platform promising to do just that.

Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives have prorogued the legislature until after the federal election, a move the Opposition called an “abdication of responsibility” as the province fights a fourth wave of COVID-19.
