At least 59 people killed in twin attacks on mosques in Pakistan

At least 59 people have died in bomb attacks on two mosques in Pakistan as the country held a public holiday to celebrate the prophet Muhammad’s birthday.

In the most serious incident, a suicide bomber killed at least 54 people who were gathering for a parade near a mosque to mark the prophet’s birthday in restive Balochistan province.

A second attack struck a mosque in a police station compound in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, killing five people and collapsing the building.

Female Suicide Bomber Blows Up 3 ChiComs in Karachi Pakistan

Three Chinese nationals and their Pakistani driver were killed in an explosion in the southern city of Karachi, police say.

The blast ripped through their van, injuring at least four others near the university’s Confucius Institute.

Police have yet to determine the cause of the blast – but the separatist Baloch Liberation Army said the van was attacked by a female suicide bomber.

The group opposes Chinese investment in Pakistan, saying locals do not benefit.

Pakistani political activist Karima Baloch, who campaigned extensively against disappearances and human rights violations in the troubled Balochistan province, was found dead in Toronto on Tuesday. Reacting to it, BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi questioned Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over the protection of lives and liberty of people in the country. Taking to Twitter, she asked, “Is it asking for a lot from Justin Trudeau to protect freedom of life and liberty of victimised people seeking democratic values?”
