Canada bracing for possible influx of asylum claimants after Trump immigration orders

Canadian refugee advocates, federal government departments and immigration lawyers are bracing for a potential influx of asylum claimants following U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive orders this week.

But as they prepare, they all say they have no idea what exactly to expect.

“With Trump, crystal balls are hard to keep clear,” said Gabriela Ramo, past chair of the Canadian Bar Association’s immigration section.

Canadian military ready to deploy at border if needed: top soldier

Is that really a good idea? On March 31, the Progress Pride flag was raised at CFB Halifax HQ…

Canada’s top soldier says the military is prepared to deploy helicopters or surveillance equipment to help secure the border with the United States if asked.

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened 25-per-cent tariffs on goods from Canada as early as Feb. 1 over his concerns the country has failed to stem illegal migration and fentanyl smuggling into American territory.

Here’s What Tom Homan Said That Stunned CNN’s Dana Bash

Border czar Tom Homan explained during an interview on CNN that there will be “collateral arrests” of illegal immigrants in sanctuary cities—a statement that stunned host Dana Bash.

“There’s going to be more collateral arrests in sanctuary cities because they forced us to go into the community and find the guy we’re looking for,” Homan said.

How refreshing.

Trump moves to expand ‘fast-track’ deportations

The Trump administration has expanded the process to swiftly deport undocumented immigrants who cannot prove they have lived in the US continuously for two years or more.

US border agents have been told to summarily deport migrants without allowing them to request legal protection, according to internal documents obtained by CBS, the BBC’s US partner.

The US has also moved to cancel all refugee travel and processing, leaving thousands stranded as they wait to come to the US.

Star finds immigration lawyer opposed to Trump’s proposed deportation of illegal alien invaders

“My concern isn’t just that we’re going to get this influx but we are going to see more of the kind of policies we’ve been seeing lately in Canada, which are very much about closing the doors and battening down the hatches.

What’s happening in the U.S. will continue to drive that rhetoric in Canada.”

Geez I sure hope so!

Pro-Migration Advocates Showcase Crying Migrants

Migration advocates are spotlighting tearful migrants at President Donald Trump’s restored southern border as the advocates try to reduce Americans’ record support for deportations.

“It is emotional extortion and it works on low-information readers and people that are watching television,” said Todd Bensman, a migration expert at the Center for Immigration Studies. “The media needs to hold the people who are pushing that tactic to account — like they do anybody in the MAGA movement or Donald Trump.”

Migrants break down in tears as Trump shuts down border entry app just minutes after taking office

A stunned migrant woman wailed in anguish at the southern border after President Trump shuttered an app that made it easier for migrants to cross into the US.

Margelis Tinoco, a Colombian woman awaiting entry to the US, was overcome with emotion after the president axed the CBP One app moments after he was sworn-in.

She had been hoping to cross into El Paso from the neighboring Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez when the app suddenly went dark, leaving her stuck.

Trump plan to deport migrants a ‘disgrace’, says Pope

Pope Francis has said that Donald Trump’s plans to deport illegal migrants from the US would be a “disgrace” if they materialised.

Speaking to an Italian TV programme from his Vatican residence, Francis said that if the plans went ahead, Trump would make “poor wretches that don’t have anything foot the bill”.

“That’s not right. That’s not how you solve problems,” he said.

As border anxiety mounts, ads for smugglers in Canada helping migrants illegally cross into U.S. flourish on social media

“Canada to USA. Safe Reach,” the Facebook post says. “No police. Low price. Payment after reach.”

“Canada to USA. Safe Game. Cheapest in Market. 100-per-cent guarantee,” reads a post on Instagram.

Smugglers offering to help people cross the border illegally into the United States are openly advertising their services on social media. The Globe and Mail has found multiple posts from people smugglers who are promoting “safe” routes to the United States, including from Montreal and British Columbia, with some claiming there will be no police involvement or checkpoints.

Trump Set To Deploy Troops at the Southern Border, Among Other Day-One Actions

President Trump plans to swiftly deploy elements of the American military to the southern border, beginning the crackdown that he had promised from the first day he launched his campaign more than two years ago. The president-elect will also end some Biden-era programs that allowed millions of migrants to be paroled and settled into the country.

Mr. Trump’s promise of the largest deportation operation in American history was one of the major pillars of his campaign, and unlike 2017 when his administration was staffed by political neophytes, he and his team have had four years during this interregnum to begin drafting executive orders.

Sweden’s Awakening: Citizenship of Dual Nationals To Be Revoked in Gang Crackdown

Sweden’s government has announced plans to amend the constitution to allow authorities to revoke Swedish citizenship for dual nationals involved in gang-related crimes. The move comes in response to rising organised crime and security concerns, which Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer has described as threats to democracy.

The reforms will enable parliament to strip dual citizens of their Swedish nationality if they are found guilty of crimes threatening state security or linked to organised criminal networks. This aligns with similar policies in Denmark, where citizenship can already be revoked for actions harmful to state interests. By targeting gang leaders orchestrating violent crimes from abroad, the government aims to disrupt networks responsible for a dramatic rise in shootings and bombings.

In an interview with Fox News this week, Homan promised a “big raid” across the country. He has previously said Chicago will be “ground zero” for the mass deportations.

Sweden celebrates huge success in migrant crackdown as number granted asylum hits 40-year low

The number of migrants granted asylum in Sweden dropped to the lowest level in 40 years in 2024, according to the country’s government – the result of a decade-long crackdown on immigration.

Sweden stunned the world by taking in nearly 163,000 asylum seekers during the 2015 migrant crisis – the highest number per capita of any EU country.

But following a dramatic policy reversal, just 6,250 asylum-related residence permits were granted in the Scandinavian country last year, according to Migration Minister Johan Forssell, who cited fresh statistics from the Migration Agency.
