PINDER: Danielle Smith’s Alberta referendum is a strategic masterstroke and Ottawa should be worried

The focus in Alberta, less so in the country, has been on the forthcoming referendum regarding independence. But Premier Smith recently called for a different referendum, one that follows the Alberta Next Review Panel. Led by Smith, it toured the province, eliciting views about the role of the province and how to strengthen autonomy within the federation.

Eleven panellists were plucked from the UCP, business, academia, the judiciary (retired), and others from the community with experience regarding a range of social issues.

At many levels, this is brilliant.

Good news: Canada will slash millions in spending on immigrants

The federal government is going to slash its immigrant settlement funding by $98.1 million this year, including a 17.3 per cent reduction for organizations that support newcomers in Ontario, the Star has learned.

The across-the-board funding reductions outside Quebec are expected to affect all services, including employment counselling, information and orientation, translation help for appointments and other supports to assist newcomer integration. Newcomer women and caregivers, survivors of trauma, people with disabilities and others who are likely to delay language and other programs are feared to be disproportionately affected, though refugee services won’t be affected by the cuts.

We should be demanding a higher standard of resourcefulness from those accepted into Canada or better yet close the border.

As Carney heads to India, Canada seeks to revoke citizenship of 2008 Mumbai attack ‘mastermind’

The Canadian government is pushing to revoke the citizenship of a Pakistan-born businessman accused of playing a key role in the 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai, India that left 166 dead.

Documents obtained by Global News show that immigration officials have notified Tahawwur Rana Hussain that they intend to strip him of the Canadian citizenship he acquired in 2001.

The 65-year-old immigrated to Canada in 1997, and was later convicted in the United States of plotting to attack staff at a Danish newspaper that printed cartoons depicting the Muslim prophet Mohamed.

First Florida, then Cuba now Mexico. What are the March Break alternatives for Canadians?

Welcome Elbows Peoples!

“Don’t go to Mexico,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged travellers Monday after the killing of a powerful drug cartel boss by Mexico’s army Sunday led to burning cars and shootouts with security forces in cities across Mexico — and adding to the latest disruptions for Canadians seeking March Break beach getaways.

“It’s amazing how all of these things have sort of collided — the U.S. (tariff wars), the Cuban situation and then this,” said Richard Vanderlubbe, president of TripCentral.ca.

Liberal Party Ratbags Will Assist Cuba’s Ratbag Communists To Maintain Power Over Oppressed Citizenry

Cuba A Communist Shithole serves as a role model for the Liberal Party of Canada

Canada plans to assist Cuba as Washington squeezes the island

…US President Donald Trump’s administration has moved to block all oil from reaching Cuba, including that from ally Venezuela, pushing up prices for food and transportation and prompting severe fuel shortages and hours of blackouts.

“We are preparing a plan to assist. We are not prepared at this point to provide any further details of an announcement,” Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said on Monday, without giving details on what such an assistance will include.

‘Scholar of the far right’ complains that move from US to Canada to flee Trump has backfired horribly

A self-proclaimed ‘scholar of the far right’ was blasted on social media after she ‘fled’ the United States to Canada.

Nope Brigade is an academic researcher who studies conservative and right-wing ideologies, and recently ‘fled’ from the current Trump administration to Vancouver – one of the world’s priciest cities.

Brigade posted a social media video begging for help after she and her family moved from Los Angeles, only to be hit with an even worse affordability crisis.

Alabama and Team USA defeat Canada

This was not a good weekend for those in Canada who suffer TDS. They made Sunday’s hockey match with Team USA all about politics and Canadian pride. The trash-talking turned to trash-eating. But I do congratulate Canada on its two silver medals in hockey—female and male. Maybe if we make it a best of the 57 genders tournament, Canada will beat Team USA.

Remember, not all Canadians suffer TDS. Sane Canadians realize it’s just a game they usually win. The last time the USA men’s team won was The Miracle on Ice. In all, Canadian men have 9 men’s team gold medals. The USA has 3.

Conservatives calling for probe into asylum seekers’ abusive access to health care

OTTAWA — The Conservatives plan to put a motion before the House of Commons on Tuesday aimed at reviewing how health benefits are provided to asylum seekers and restricting who has access to those services.

The planned text of the motion, which has been shared with The Canadian Press, says the cost of the Interim Federal Health Program has more than quadrupled since the 2020 fiscal year, growing from $211 million to $896 million in 2024-25.

That data was pulled from a report by the parliamentary budget officer published earlier this month.

They should only be offered MAiD like Canadian citizens, that’ll send them packing back home.

Escaping Trudeau’s ‘lost decade’ — why Western self-determination is the only cure for Ottawa’s toxic elitism

From Mark Carney’s globalist agenda to the ‘climate crisis’ charade, the West is ready to choose dignity and prosperity over the growing mess of the Canadian state.

One of the pleasures of writing columns for the Western Standard is receiving feedback. A recent email from a former law school roommate posed some interesting and relevant questions that, while unable to answer, this column can perhaps provide some perspective and context.

One addressed geography — would independence be just Alberta or also include Saskatchewan and Manitoba? To that, I would include parts of British Columbia.

The great Canadian strategic game is on – and the Arctic may be changed forever

In light of President Trump’s recent threats to Greenland, there was considerable interest at last week’s Munich Security Conference in the last great “ungoverned”, “interstitial” region of the world: the vast Arctic. Alas, the emerging manner of “governing” the Arctic is not only militaristic, but exceedingly incoherent in its militarism.

The ostensible response to America threatening to annex Greenland is to increase Nato’s presence and interest in Greenland. And the ostensible response to Russian Arctic ambitions or actions is, again, to increase Nato presence and interest in the Arctic. In short, more Nato presence appears to be a fix-all to Arctic threats emanating from allies and adversaries alike.

Despite compelling evidence that Canada faces a complex threat spectrum, Canadian policymakers have chosen not to act.

In February 2025, Canada listed seven transnational organized crime groups, primarily Mexican cartels, as terrorist entities, noting “their drug trafficking activities are a risk to national security and must be stopped.” In a follow-up media interview, senior RCMP officers confirmed that all listed groups were active in Canada and “very much involved in crime impacting Canada.”

The move sparked significant debate. Critics argued that terrorism is ideologically motivated, seeking political or social change through fear, whereas organized crime is driven by profit and pragmatism. While cartels use terrorist-like violence, it is typically to protect markets, eliminate rivals, or deter state interference — not to alter political structures. In this view, cartels and terrorists occupy different ends of the threat spectrum.

Preparing for the worst

Canada is turning its armed forces over to foreign mercenaries. What could go wrong?

A new age of ‘total war’ may be approaching. What would it mean for a generation of young, fighting-age Canadians to be thrust into a military conflict? For that, we look to Ukraine

Around this time of year, Grade 12 students across the country are starting to hear back about their university applications. For many, an acceptance letter represents the pinnacle of a long and arduous process – not only the countless hours of studying and prepping for exams, but also the gauntlet of sports practices, music lessons and volunteer hours that fill out the applicant’s extracurricular profile.

University admissions are but one milestone in a larger social script – one that reflects our assumptions about what it means to “make it” in contemporary society. It’s a familiar script, whose story beats are the stuff of a thousand bank advertisements: convocations, starter jobs and starter homes, painting a baby’s room, a luxury car, a long stretch of golden years, laughter on a beach.

I doubt many will sign up and Ukraine is not exactly a role model.
