The Crown broke a promise to First Nations. It could now owe billions.

Criminal colonizer cis-gendered white males

Patricia Tangie’s ancestors thought they had a deal.

More than 170 years ago, before Canada confederated in 1867, Indigenous people in what’s now Northern Ontario signed treaties, ceding a vast territory north of Lake Superior and Lake Huron to the Crown in exchange for a promise: that the wealth flowing from the land would be shared with them.

Trudeau pushes back after Netanyahu again rejects two-state solution

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau criticized Benjamin Netanyahu’s position on Palestinian statehood after the Israeli prime minister claimed in a nationally-televised news conference that the so-called “two-state solution” is dead.

“I was not surprised to hear Prime Minister Netanyahu share that. That has long been his position,” Trudeau said Thursday when asked about the comments at a press conference in Iqaluit.

“He and I had, just a few weeks ago, an extensive conversation on exactly this topic and others

I doubt Netanyahu thinks about Junior at all.

Israeli envoy joins calls for Canada to clarify its stance on ICJ genocide case

OTTAWA – Israel’s envoy to Canada is joining calls for the federal Liberals to clearly state Ottawa’s position as the International Court of Justice considers an allegation of genocide against Israel.

Iddo Moed says Canada should “leave no room for misinterpretation” on its stance, noting that many of Canada’s allies and peers have stated a clear position on the case.

The highest court of the United Nations held two days of public hearings last week as South Africa argued that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Tens of thousands of Ukrainians expected to come to Canada in the next few months

OTTAWA – Settlement agencies are preparing for a surge of Ukrainians arriving in Canada before emergency visas for those fleeing the Russian invasion expire at the end of March.

The federal government has issued more then 930,000 temporary emergency visas since March 2022 for Ukrainians who want to work or study in Canada while they wait out the war.

I have no problem with this, but cut off migrants from everywhere else.

Cost of Canadian Coast Guard patrol ships jumps by $500 million in less than a year, MPs told

The cost of a project to build two patrol ships for the Canadian Coast Guard has jumped by $500 million in less than a year, this newspaper has confirmed.

The project budget for the two Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships is now $2.1 billion, up from a previous estimate of $1.6 billion.

Craig Macartney, communications advisor for Fisheries and Oceans Canada, noted in an email that construction of the first of two new coast guard Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships, or AOPS, started in August at Irving shipbuilding in Halifax, N.S.

Joel Kotkin: Trudeau has weakened Canada — and by extension, the entire free world

At a time when the western world desperately needs some backbone, Canada seems to be swaying. It appears to have moved away from its long-term commitment to protect our now wobbling western civilization. This can be seen in how Canada deals with its defence responsibilities, its flaccid stand on Israel and in its belief in the value of its own existence.

The Trudeau Liberals created a ‘population trap’ that is making us poorer

Immigration Minister Marc Miller made the media rounds on the weekend promising to think about – maybe, perhaps, possibly – capping the number of international students Canada accepts, and pinning the blame for an “out of control” problem on others.

“Well, we’ll consider it. We’ll consider it, and we’ll continue to consider it,” Mr. Miller told CTV’s Question Period. “If provinces don’t do their jobs, we’re ready to do it.”

Canada to ban funding for research linked to foreign universities, labs that pose risk to national security

OTTAWA — Canada will ban federal funding for research in “sensitive areas” done in affiliation with more than 100 entities the government deems pose a risk to national security, including foreign universities and institutions.

Canadian researchers will no longer be eligible to receive federal funding for technological research that is done in affiliation with, or with funding from, any of the newly listed entities.

I feel Justin will allow the China class to strip mine Canadian research.

Ukrainian officials say year-long delay in delivery of air defence promised by Canada has come with a high price

Too many Ukrainians have died in the year since Canada announced the “high-priority donation” of an advanced air-defence system to Ukraine that has yet to be delivered, the secretary of country’s National Security and Defence Council said Tuesday.

Oleksiy Danilov told The Globe and Mail that his own nephew, killed near the front line on Jan. 8, was among those who had died in the 53 weeks since Canada promised to purchase a US$406-million National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, or NASAMS, on Ukraine’s behalf. While the reasons for the delay may make sense in Ottawa, the wait for the U.S.-made equipment is harder to understand for those facing daily Russian missile attacks.

Invasive or not enough? Lawyers raise concerns over screening of Hamas visa applicants

OTTAWA – The security screening the federal government has brought in for people applying to flee the Gaza Strip is facing criticism from both lawyers who feel its questions are too invasive and others who think it should dig even deeper.

A special program that would allow up to 1,000 people in Gaza with relatives in Canada to apply for visas opened for applications last week, with the federal government seeking an extraordinary level of detail.

Canadians worry U.S. democracy cannot survive Trump’s reelection … but Trump is more popular among Canadians than Trudeau

Canadians worry U.S. democracy cannot survive Trump’s return to White House, poll finds

OTTAWA – About two-thirds of Canadians surveyed this month said American democracy cannot survive another four years of Donald Trump in the White House, and about half said the United States is on the way to becoming an authoritarian state, a poll released on Monday said.

The November U.S. election is likely to pit President Joe Biden against Trump, who is the clear frontrunner to win the Republican nomination as voting in the presidential primary race kicks off in Iowa on Monday.

FIRST READING: Trump is more popular among Canadians than Trudeau (and what that means)

Biden was the clear victor at 67 per cent, but Trump came in with the unusually high support of 33 per cent of Canadian respondents.

That’s higher than the current approval rating for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, which the Angus Reid Institute last pegged at 31 per cent. It’s also slightly higher than the percentage by which Trudeau won his last federal election; the Liberals secured their minority government in 2021 with just 32.62 per cent of ballots cast.
