The chaotic race to replace Justin Trudeau is a mess of the Liberals’ making

Regardless of how one feels about Justin Trudeau and his legacy, it must be conceded that his long-delayed sort-of-resignation — for let’s remember that he’s still Prime Minister and will be for at least several weeks — is extraordinarily poorly timed. Rather than quit at a juncture that would have allowed the Liberal party to choose a successor who had any chance of running a competitive election, what we have now is … this. A period of extended Parliamentary paralysis and political pugilism just as the country is about to face down a potentially existential trade war and a geopolitical realignment.

So, good job everyone.

Auto industry calls for end to ‘complete fantasy’ zero-emission vehicle mandates

OTTAWA — With coffers running dry on federal government incentives to purchase zero emission vehicles, Canada’s auto industry says it’s time to do away with plans to phase out internal combustion engines by 2035.

Monday’s closure of the Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) program comes just 12 months before the start of a multi-year EV sales mandate where 20% of all new Canadian car sales must be zero-emission, reaching 100% by 2035.

City Of Ottawa To Spend $15M On Big Tent For Trudeau’s Replacement Migrants

Cost of building tent-like migrant shelter pegged at $15M

The City of Ottawa has found a contractor to design and build a tent-like structure to shelter migrants, with an estimated price tag of up to $15 million.

In a post on the city’s online public consultation portal Engage Ottawa on Tuesday, the city said BLT Construction Services is the only available and qualified vendor to provide a “Sprung Instant Structure” that will house a newcomer reception centre.

Sprung Structures is a leading manufacturer of tensile fabric structures that can be quickly built and customized. BLT would oversee the design of the structure, as well its construction and interior fit-up.

GUNTER: Carney and Freeland cut from similar cloth, destined to fail

With the announcement by former B.C. Premier Christy Clark that she would not seek the leadership of the Liberal Party, the race is really down to two people who have not yet officially declared: former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney and former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.

Given how the criminal pigs of the LPC have turned Canada into 3rd World cesspit no member of the party should ever be elected again.

Metro Vancouver can’t absorb so many people so fast, says mayor and others

Douglas Todd: Ottawa has lured a supercharged volume of immigrants and temporary residents to Metro Vancouver — 119,000 in one year alone — without providing the infrastructure to support them.

“I guess the federal government had this misguided idea that you could invite all these people to Canada and they wouldn’t have needs. They were never going to use the health-care system, they were never going to flush a toilet, they were never going to send their kids to school.”

So says Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West, who is among the few politicians raising alarms about what he calls a “sleeper issue” — that Ottawa has been allowing a high number of immigrants and temporary residents into the country without providing the infrastructure to support them.

One third of Ontario newcomers say they felt safer in home countries, survey finds … Probably because all their criminals migrated here under Trudeau’s replacement scam

Oleg Redko came to Canada in 2022 to escape the war in Ukraine, while Parth Shah moved to Canada from India with dreams of prosperity and a specialized education.

Both had an image of what Canada would be, but soon after arriving, they had experiences that shattered their sense of safety in their new country.

Because all their criminals became Trudeau Migrants. I suggest they move back for their own safety!

Ukrainian families question Canada’s commitment as residency applications appear ‘lost’

As Canada plans cuts to immigration, Ukrainian families say they’re worried and “disoriented” after getting mixed messages about their permanent residency applications under a special humanitarian pathway to reunite families fleeing war.

Some applicants allege Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) “lost” their applications, and question Canada’s commitment to continue supporting Ukrainians as the war rages on in Ukraine and Russia.

“It worries me very much because it’s once again interruption of promises,” said Eugenia Pynchuk, a Canadian citizen, as she sat next to her father. Her parents are currently in Ottawa under a visitor visa that’s set to expire next year.

Something is rotten at IRCC.

Colby Cosh: Mark Carney’s desecration of central bank neutrality

Ignatieff but without the charm.

The Economist Party is beginning to squawk a little bit about Mark Carney’s entry into electoral politics, which may be announced by the time you read this. The former boss of the central banks of Canada and the United Kingdom is said to be considering a run for the leadership of the Liberal Party, and will have lots of help from the inner circle of Justin Trudeau, assuming that this is the kind of help that ends up, y’know, helping. Carney has been talked about as a potential saviour of the Liberals for years, yet it seems we are only getting around to asking a basic question: is this at all a good idea?

What Are the Current ‘Safe’ Liberal Seats Amid Decline in Polls?

The Liberal Party of Canada appears to be on the verge of another historic defeat and it remains to be seen whether a new leader can influence current voting predictions.

As it now stands, the Liberals are veering toward a repeat of their worst showing of 2011, when the party went from 77 seats down to 34. If the “wave” was orange in 2011, with the NDP forming the Official Opposition to Stephen Harper, the Conservatives look poised for a blue wave in 2025 to form a majority government.

How the federal Liberals have opened their leadership race to foreign interference

Justice Marie-Josée Hogue will soon reveal her findings on foreign interference. (Disclosure: I was an invited presenter to the Commission). She has already noted the parties’ defences against penetration do not appear “robust.”

Her recommendations will be wide-ranging. If she recommends that all parties should be subject to supervision in their conduct of nominations and, more importantly, leaderships, the reaction from Liberals, Conservatives and New Democrats will be unanimous: “No!” They are wrong and the justice would be right. Here’s why.

Federal security agencies to monitor Liberal leadership race for foreign interference

Federal security agencies will monitor for foreign interference in the Liberal leadership race, providing some protection after MPs were already raising concerns about potential meddling in the contest.

The Security and Intelligence Threats to Elections (SITE) Task Force will do the monitoring and offer security advice to the Liberal Party and leadership candidates as part of its mandate to safeguard democratic institutions from outside interference, the Privy Council Office announced Monday.

It is the first leadership race under scrutiny by the task force since it was created in 2019; its mandate was at first to monitor only general elections, and then expanded to by-elections.
