John Ivison: Carney’s feel-good video is weak medicine for our grave economic reality

Was the timing of Mark Carney’s feel-good “fireside chat” video released Sunday mere coincidence, landing as it did the day before concerning inflation numbers?

Or was it a deliberate calculation to point out that Canadian fur traders were all over the northern plains before the Americans had left St. Louis, a day ahead of confirmation that consumers are now paying $2.50 for a single bloody cucumber?

Trump got his regime change in Canada. Now he may regret it

Well, the Iranian case is up for debate, but there’s no question your commander in chief effected “regime change” here in Canada. After last week’s special elections, Mark Carney, the prime minister whose elevation Donald Trump helped bring about, has at last secured a parliamentary majority for Canada’s Liberal Party.

But, as observers are keen to note, there is never a guarantee the leader you don’t like will be replaced by someone less problematic.

We’re the one’s who will regret it not Trump, not Carney.

Canada’s top cardinal urges Mark Carney and Liberals to stop Kill Krazy euthanasia expansion

Cardinal Frank Leo, the metropolitan archbishop of Toronto, called on Prime Minister Mark Carney and all his MPs to “choose life” and allow support to a Conservative Party private members’ bill that would stop a planned expansion of euthanasia to those with mental illness.

“I ask you to choose life and not death; to help build a civilization that cares for those suffering and does not eliminate them, but instead surrounds them with dignity, compassion, and love,” wrote Cardinal Leo in a letter released today, addressed directly to Carney and his MPs.

Nearly 80% of Canadians say cost-of-living outpaces their income: poll

OTTAWA — Despite saying they earn a decent salary, more than half of working Canadians say they’re having trouble making ends meet.

That’s according to a new survey commissioned by H&R Block that paints a bleak picture of Canada’s ongoing affordability crisis, with those in Atlantic Canada reportedly the most concerned.

A network of YouTube accounts is promoting U.S. annexation to Albertans, researchers say. It has 40M views

The mispronunciation of Regina — as in, the capital of Saskatchewan — was a clue. Then there was the reference to B.C. MLA Dallas Brodie, a woman, as a “he.”

These slip-ups helped lead researchers at the Media Ecosystem Observatory (MEO) in Montreal to what they say is a network of affiliated YouTube accounts that appear to belong to concerned Canadians, sympathize with some Albertans’ grievances and push the idea of American annexation.

“The video narrators performed ‘Albertan,’ but there were these moments where you’re like, ‘OK, so this person is not from here,’ ” said Chris Ross, the senior analyst at the Observatory, who led his team’s recent probe into thousands of suspicious YouTube videos.

Who is behind this? Who stands to gain?  Russia? China? Liberal Party members?  Likely the latter.

Mark Carney gets mixed reviews for response to ‘Donald Trump’s war on Canada’

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney’s view that Canada’s “weakness” stems from its longtime close trade ties with the U.S. was mocked by the Conservatives Monday, and met skepticism by an Eastern premier who warned it will likely further anger the U.S.

In a video message posted Sunday on YouTube, Carney said the U.S. “has fundamentally changed its approach to trade, raising its tariffs to levels last seen during the Great Depression. Many of our former strengths, based on our close ties to America, have become our weaknesses, weaknesses that we must correct.”

Carney’s choice of words was no error.

Punishing young Canadians for leaving doesn’t solve the problem

Punishing young Canadians for leaving doesn’t solve the problem

Earlier this month, during a panel discussion on the Canadian economy at the Liberal Party convention in Montreal, former Google CFO Patrick Pichette suggested that the government should restrict the ability of young Canadians to work in the United States, because Canadian taxes had funded their education. A clip of these remarks went viral, and for good reason: as Shopify founder Tobi Lütke said in response, “making Canada a cage” is not the right strategy to build a strong economy.

BARBER: Canada’s European Union flirtation is a betrayal of Alberta — and a blueprint for economic decline

The French Foreign Minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, the former German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, Finland’s President Alexander Stubb, and other European figures have speculated about the possibility of Canada joining the European Union (EU). Prime Minister Mark Carney has dismissed the notion of Canada joining the EU but has advocated for closer, stronger ties with the bloc. If he were inclined toward EU membership, it would be imprudent for him to announce it at this time. It would be far better to continue aligning Canadian laws and regulations with those of the EU before making any formal announcement. Joining the EU is a slow, multi-year process that often takes a decade or more.

This can’t be happening at Rideau Hall

With the very notable exception of promising to learn French, then failing to do so, Mary Simon has not been a terrible Governor General. She spent money rather freely, of course, but they all do, and Parliament makes the budget, after all. You didn’t hear much from or about her, which is Job One for a governor general. That is, except in the francophone media, where she is a constant thorn in nationalists’ side because of her linguistic shortcomings.

LILLEY: Carney warns against U.S. ties after betting his fortune on America

For a man so heavily invested in the United States, Mark Carney certainly wants us to fear the USA and to see it as a threat. The prime minister’s video address, released on Sunday, contained several warnings about being too close to the Americans.

He even invoked the War of 1812 while invoking the idea that we need to fight a common enemy today.

Mark Carney would likely keep his majority if an election was held now, polls suggest

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney would likely keep — and possibly enlarge — his new-found Liberal majority if a general election was held today, according to the latest projection from The Signal polling aggregator.

The latest forecast pegs the Liberals’ chances of winning a majority of seats in the House of Commons at 96 per cent, while the Conservatives under Pierre Poilievre have a one per cent chance of clinching power, and only through a minority government.
