ANALYSIS: StatCan’s Alarming Numbers on Youth Exposed to Online ‘Hate’ Tell a Different Story Upon Closer Examination

About 70 percent of Canadian youth have been exposed to online hate, says a Statistics Canada report released the day after the Liberal government tabled its Online Harms Act aimed at the problem. The alarmingly high number suggests Bill C-63 has arrived just in time to address a widespread problem, but a closer look at the StatCan survey questions tells another story.

“Hate” is in the eye of the beholder. Survey participants were given no guidance on what “hate” means, and sociologist David Haskell says young people are increasingly taught to perceive hate in comments previously considered offensive, but not truly harmful or “hateful.”

“There is lots of evidence coming from current psychological research showing that educational environments are ’training’ students to experience a phenomenon that does not exist in objective reality,” Mr. Haskell, an associate professor in the faculty of Liberal Arts at Wilfrid Laurier University, told The Epoch Times via email.

Canada’s ‘unhinged’ housing: 25 students living in basement, room for rent with bed in kitchen

As Canadians struggle to keep up with rising costs, ‘unconventional’ living arrangements are becoming more common.

Earlier in February, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown announced that 25 students were found to be living illegally in an apartment in a discovery made by the city’s bylaw department. Brown stated at a Committee of Council meeting that there could be about 100,000 residents living in illegal rental units in Brampton and the city intends to crack down on the issue, Toronto Sun reported.

Trudeau’s Legacy: Canada is no longer one of the richest nations on Earth. Country after country is passing us by

The growth crisis deepens. The latest figures from Statistics Canada confirm that Canada suffered yet another decline in per capita GDP in the fourth quarter of 2023: the fifth decline in the past six quarters, the worst sustained drop in more than 30 years. Per capita GDP, after adjusting for inflation, is now below where it was in the fourth quarter of 2014, nine years ago.

ANALYSIS: Hiking Immigration to Boost Canada’s Economy Amid Aging Population Looking Doubtful

Canada’s mass immigration policy to revitalize the economy amid an aging population has yet to bear fruit. Compared to higher U.S. business investment and productivity, relying on immigration for economic growth has been to the country’s detriment, says a former Statistics Canada chief economic analyst.

“It is a clear fact that these very high rates of immigration have not given the economy a boost. … We cannot absorb this number of people that fast,” Philip Cross, senior fellow at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, told The Epoch Times on Feb. 27.

Besides labour, capital and technology also contribute to economic growth, said Mr. Cross.

Trudeau’s internet thoughtcrime bill aims to punish people retroactively for not deleting ‘hate speech’

On Monday, the Trudeau Liberals unveiled the Online Harms Act, a bill that Justice Minister Arif Virani claimed would make the internet a safer place for all, especially children. Parts of the act, however, have been criticised, namely those dealing with what the government has deemed to be “hate speech.”

If passed, the bill would amend the Canadian Human Rights Act to find someone spreading “hate speech” is liable so long as the speech is not deleted, which some have interpreted to mean that the government wants to retroactively come after people for potentially violative content they’ve posted in the past.

Will Poilievre denounce this madness in no uncertain terms?

Anand ‘very surprised’ to learn DND employee’s company got ArriveCan contract, Poilievre calls for police probe

News that the CEO of Dalian Enterprises, which received $7.9 million for its work on the ArriveCan app, was also an employee of the Department of National Defence (DND) was a “surprise” to former defence minister Anita Anand.

“I was definitely not aware. I was very surprised to hear this news,” the Treasury Board President said to reporters on Parliament Hill on Thursday.

CTV News broke the story on Wednesday after the department confirmed that the employee in question, David Yeo, had been suspended. DND also said it was suspending Dalian contracts and launching an internal investigation.

How much did Anand pocket? Junior?

Douglas Todd: Population growth squeezing Canada’s young adults like never before

Wondering why rents in Canada are breaking records?

The Bank of Montreal’s chief economist, Douglas Porter, says there is “zero mystery.”

The population of people 20-to-29-years-old in Canada has suddenly shot up 6.2 per cent in a year. That’s nearly double Canada’s recent overall population jump, which is also breaking records.

Poilievre claims Trudeau is covering up lapses at high-security lab, PM accuses rival of spewing conspiracies

Facing questions about how scientists who were intentionally sharing information with China were cleared to work at a Winnipeg lab studying deadly diseases, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau deflected criticism to his chief political rival and accused the Conservative leader of weaponizing national security.

During a Thursday news conference in Thunder Bay, Ont., Trudeau was asked how scientists working on high-security viruses at the Winnipeg-based National Microbiology Lab were able to collaborate with the People’s Republic of China.

After a years-long fight for access, the federal government dumped hundreds of pages of documents about the dismissal of Dr. Xiangguo Qiu and her husband Keding Cheng. The two were marched out of the facility in July 2019 and were stripped of their security clearances. Their dismissals were announced in January 2021.

Jamie Sarkonak: Trudeau’s digital bureaucracy is coming for your social media posts

Bureaucracies usually have a purpose. The public health system cares for the physical bodies of citizens; the justice system (ideally) keeps the dangerous from the normal; the immigration system controls entry and exit.

Soon, you may have to add to the list a “digital safety” bureaucracy, designed to regulate feelings and ideas, and the places where these things are expressed. This is what the forthcoming online harms act, tabled Monday in the Liberals’ Bill C-63, will do. Individuals who value their ability to discuss controversy online should be wary — as should any major social media company that happens to operate in Canada.

Is the ‘market value of becoming Canadian’ dropping? Fewer immigrants are becoming citizens

Canada is taking in more immigrants than it ever has. But new data suggests that fewer and fewer of them are becoming citizens.

The proportion of eligible permanent residents acquiring citizenship has dropped significantly, especially during the last census period. A study released by Statistics Canada on Wednesday shows the proportion of permanent residents who acquired Canadian citizenship after they met the residency requirement has decreased from 75 per cent in 1996 to just 46 per cent in 2021.

While the rate of newcomers acquiring citizenship has declined consistently during the past six censuses, the drop was steep in the latest national survey, particularly among recent immigrants with lower levels of education, lower family income and lower language skills.

Another Trudeau legacy – Migrants with ZERO loyalty or concern for Canada.

“Immigrants get candid about why they want to leave Canada”

When Raghunath Poshala immigrated to Canada from India in 2018, he was promised a better life for himself and his family.

“Everybody said it’s a first world country — education and healthcare are free. So, I thought it’d be a better place for us to raise a family,” the 39-year-old explained over the phone.

DND suspends contracts with ArriveCan contractor after learning CEO is a DND employee

Just a day after the federal government announced a review of its program to support Indigenous contractors, CTV News has learned the CEO of a company that prompted the review is an employee of the Department of National Defence (DND).

David Yeo is the CEO of Dalian Enterprises, which received $7.9 million for its work on the ArriveCan app.

Fired Winnipeg lab scientists did not disclose ‘extensive relationship’ with China

Justin Trudeau Xiangguo Qiu Keding Cheng – Everybody say Xi

Two scientists fired from Canada’s National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg in 2019 had an “extensive relationship” with China that they did not properly disclose to Canadian health officials, according to documents that were finally released over four years later.

Health Minister Mark Holland announced the tabling of the documents in Parliament on Wednesday, after a special ad-hoc committee formed to review the documents recommended they be released unredacted.
