‘You are alone’: The increasingly lonely road of the unvaccinated

Greg Bates was driving between Calgary and Hamilton, a long-haul domestic route that would soon be the only kind of trucking he’s allowed to do.

The man from Olds, Alta., has been driving trucks for 15 years, most recently splitting his time between domestic trips and runs down to U.S. destinations. The U.S. trips can be more lucrative (and American highways often have better bathrooms and restaurants en route, in Bates’ opinion) but they’re now off-limits.

Bates is one of thousands of truckers who haven’t gotten the COVID-19 vaccine, and so won’t be eligible to drive into Canada from the U.S., without going into quarantine.

Ontario reports 56 new COVID-19 deaths; ICU occupancy holds steady

Ontario reported 56 new deaths due to COVID-19 on Sunday, as the burden on the province’s intensive care units held relatively stable over the past 24 hours.

The number of people hospitalized in intensive care due to COVID-19 across the province stayed relatively constant, rising from 600 on Saturday to 604 today.

WARMINGTON: Convoy of truckers against vaccine mandates ready to roll on Ottawa

A fundraising effort for a convoy of protesting truckers heading to Ottawa from across Canada has topped $2 million in donations.

With more than 26,000 people donating, and thousands of truckers expected to protest vaccine mandates and cross-border supply chain concerns, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may soon see a groundswell of emotion, anger and concern.

US Vaccine Mandate on Freight Drivers Coming From Canada May Worsen Auto Supply Chain Shortage

The U.S. mandate, announced in October, requires all essential foreign travelers, including truck drivers, who cross U.S. land borders to be fully vaccinated. Essential nonresident travelers had been able to enter the U.S. during the pandemic regardless of their vaccination status, in part so as not to disrupt trade and to give them more time to get vaccinated.

Public Health’s Truth Problem

Throughout the pandemic, medical and scientific institutions have disseminated dubious advice, flawed studies, and even outright falsehoods.

Throughout the pandemic, public-health officials have omitted uncomfortable truths, made misleading statements, and advanced demonstrably false assertions. In the information era, where what one says is easily accessible and anyone may read primary literature, these falsehoods will be increasingly recognized and severely damage the field’s credibility. No doubt, officials and organizations promulgating them had a range of motivations—including honorable ones, such as wanting to encourage salutary choices. Yet the subsequent loss of institutional trust may result in harm that far outweighs any short-term policy objectives.

Ontario reports over 4,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations, 47 more deaths

Ontario reported over 4,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations today and 47 more virus-related deaths, including a young person under the age of 19.

There are currently 4,026 patients with the virus in Ontario hospitals, down from 4,114 hospitalizations yesterday, according to the Ministry of Health.

Of the latest hospitalizations, Health Minister Christine Elliott says 56 per cent were admitted to hospital for COVID-19 and 44 per cent were admitted for other reasons but have tested positive for COVID-19.

Public outrage over the unvaccinated is driving a crisis in bioethics

The pandemic has triggered a new debate over what used to be a settled principle of bioethics — that you don’t treat patients differently based on past behaviour that may have contributed to their condition.

“The core fundamental principle of clinical ethics tells us that once a person enters the hospital as a patient, whatever got them there is no longer part of the equation,” said Vardit Ravitsky, who teaches bioethics at the Université de Montreal and Harvard Medical School.

Massive Trucker Protest on the Rise

The latest on the escalating trucker protest along the U.S.-Canada border is a convoy planned for January 28. That’s when “Convoi pour la liberté 2022” leaves French speaking Quebec from a point along the border, bound for Canada’s Capital of Ottawa. They’re joining fellow drivers who have been protesting since Monday, slowing border crossing stations to a standstill.

Mainstream network news outlets in the United States are doing their best to cover up the coverage of an ongoing trucker protest. It has already snarled the border into chaos as the “strike” threatens to spread south into America.

U.S. drivers are expected to join in starting January 20th. That matches up with Biden’s versions of the mandate restrictions but details are scarce.

What’s going on in Quebec?

The French Canadian province has gone in an increasingly authoritarian direction

Never fully in but never fully out, Quebec has always had an awkward status in Canada. Fiercely protective of its French identity, it has long flirted with separating from its anglophone motherland  but, a bit like Scotland, the support was never quite there. Also like Scotland, it has, throughout the pandemic, tried to flex its (limited) autonomy over health policy by consistently pushing for more restrictions than the national government.

2/3 of Canadians Favour Mandatory Vax, Quarter Support Jailing Unvaxed

Over a quarter of Canadians support putting unvaccinated people in jail for jab refusal, while two-thirds say they would support mandatory vaccinations for all residents over the age of five.

A poll released this week by the Canadian firm Maru Public Opinion claims that 27 per cent of the Canadian public would support the government putting people in prison for a short time simply for being unvaccinated.
