Covid: UK daily cases pass 50,000 for first time since January

More than 50,000 daily coronavirus cases have been reported in the UK for the first time since mid-January.

There were 51,870 cases recorded – the highest figure since 15 January – and 49 deaths within 28 days of a positive test.

From Monday, lockdown rules will end in England – although some guidance will remain.

Earlier, England’s chief medical officer warned hospital admissions could hit “scary numbers”.

Prof Chris Whitty said the number of people in hospital with Covid was doubling roughly every three weeks.

‘We’re not gonna have a split society’: Ontario Premier Doug Ford rules out a provincial ‘vaccine passport’

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said in the strongest terms yet Thursday that the province will not create a vaccine passport that would allow people to signal to businesses and other organizations that they have been vaccinated.

“The answer is no, we’re not gonna do it. We’re not gonna have a split society,” Ford told reporters in response to a question about creating vaccine passports Thursday at the first press conference he has held in some time.

The Ontario government is suggesting you hold on to your COVID-19 vaccine receipt.

You may be asking, wait, what receipt? It’s understandable if you were so excited after getting your second shot that you forgot to meticulously file away the piece of paper you should have received that confirmed you’re double dosed, along with other personal information and details about the vaccine itself.

Now, with some businesses saying they’ll be asking potential customers to prove their vaccination status for entry, that little piece of paper suddenly seems much more important.

Luckily I found mine in the car the other day.

Children’s viruses that disappeared during pandemic lockdowns are back, doctors say

As children emerge from their homes after COVID-19-related lockdowns, common viruses that all but disappeared during the pandemic are re-emerging too, doctors say.

“This time of year in pediatric hospitals, it’s usually quiet,” said Dr. Fatima Kakkar, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist at CHU Sainte-Justine in Montreal. “But now we’re seeing a surge of respiratory infections.”

The level of non-COVID illnesses is what Kakkar usually sees in the fall, she said, when children are out and about in daycares or schools.

Kids should be outside eating dirt.

France is sliding into medical authoritarianism

Emmanuel Macron has effectively made citizenship conditional on vaccination.

Emmanuel Macron announced new vaccine-passport measures on Monday evening. At a stroke, he removed people’s right to decide whether or not they undergo a medical procedure.

Already, there was a requirement to show proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test in order to enter nightclubs. From 21 July, this will be extended to cultural centres and leisure venues with capacities of more than 50 people. From August, it will be extended to bars, restaurants, planes, hospitals, retirement homes, shopping centres and long-distance train journeys. These restrictions will also apply to all workers in these sectors, who, in effect, must be vaccinated in order to work.

False Labelling in COVID Origin Scrutiny Reminiscent of Climate Change Debate, Observers Say

Labelling of virus lab leak theory as a conspiracy was shaped by influential figures with a conflict of interest; some see that as a lesson for other scientific debates

The way the discussion on the origin of COVID-19 was derailed by conspiracy labelling reminds environmental economist Ross McKitrick of the debate around climate change.

“There are ideas that were never disproven and actually have a lot of evidence to support them, but for political reasons and cultural reasons within the university they just aren’t looked at,” McKitrick, a professor at the University of Guelph, said in an interview.

Toronto strip clubs mark latest sector to require COVID-19 vaccinations for attendance

With various businesses in Ontario preparing to once again welcome customers as a part of the provincial government’s decision to enter into Step 3 of the reopening plan on Friday, different sectors have begun announcing policies that will require patrons to be inoculated against COVID-19.

Opening Friday afternoon is Filmores, a strip club in downtown Toronto that has, for months, been barred from providing adult entertainment as a result of restrictions imposed by the Ontario government.

China Threatens Nuclear War if U.S. Continues Investigating COVID-19 Origins

What is it Beijing’s leaders fear?

The Chinese are warning about an impending nuclear war if the United States does not cease its investigation into the origins of the COVID pandemic. They warn that the Americans must call off their probe into the sources of the disease — a warning which has prompted many American analysts to conclude that the leaders in Beijing fear discovery of the truth: that they — the Chinese Communists — are the source of the pandemic.

Poll: 63% of Americans Believe China Should Pay Pandemic Reparations

Sixty-three percent of Americans believe the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) should pay pandemic reparations, according to a TIPP poll released Tuesday conducted for the Center for Security Policy.

“That number rises from 63 percent to 78 percent if investigations reveal that the Chinese government released the SARS-CoV-19 human coronavirus on purpose,” the survey results detailed.

Ontario reports 153 new Covid cases … and … Can businesses enforce their own vaccine passport policy?

Can private businesses enforce their own COVID-19 ‘vaccine passports’?

Most Canadian provinces are still on the fence about whether they will implement a domestic COVID-19 “vaccine passport” to allow access to some public places, but what leeway do private businesses have to introduce their own policy?

According to lawyer Cara Zwibel, who is also the director of the Fundamental Freedoms Program at the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, businesses can turn away whoever they like — as long as it isn’t discriminatory under human rights statutes.

And now Jello Tory gets in on the act…

The province needs to develop a basic, opt-in COVID-19 vaccine passport as proof of vaccination is increasingly required for foreign travel and other activities, Toronto Mayor John Tory said Wednesday.

Asked if the City of Toronto would develop its own portable proof of COVID-19 vaccination, the mayor told CP24 the province of Ontario is best suited to develop one as it manages all data related to vaccines administered.
