AstraZeneca vaccine trials in U.S. confirm shot is safe, highly effective

AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine provided strong protection against sickness and eliminated hospitalizations and deaths from the disease across all age groups in a late-stage study in the United States, the company announced Monday.

AstraZeneca said its experts did not identify any safety concerns related to the vaccine, including finding no increased risk of rare blood clots identified in Europe.

But… European trust in AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine plummets after blood clot reports

Confidence in the safety of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine has taken a big hit in Spain, Germany, France and Italy as reports of rare blood clots have been linked to it and many countries briefly stopped using it, poll data showed on Monday.

The polling firm YouGov said it had already found in late February that Europeans were more hesitant about the AstraZeneca vaccine than about those from Pfizer Inc /BioNTech and Moderna Inc, and that the clot concerns had further damaged public perceptions of the AstraZeneca shot’s safety.

More than 600 Amazon workers in Brampton got COVID-19. Why were so few reported to the province?

More than 600 Amazon workers at one warehouse alone have contracted COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. But the online retail giant has registered fewer than five cases at the provincial workers’ compensation board, the Star has learned.

Last week, Peel Public Health ordered the company to close all shifts after concerns that cases within its Brampton Heritage Road facility were “increasing significantly,” even as community cases dropped.

But despite hundreds of workers testing positive, the company has registered almost no claims at the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board as of this past week.

Ontario employers are required to report COVID cases to the WSIB, which then decides if they are work-related. If the workplace contributed “significantly” to a worker contracting the virus, they would be eligible for financial support or health-care benefits.

FUREY: It’s not about ‘science’ — lobbying clearly works to change pandemic restrictions

FUREY: It’s not about ‘science’ — lobbying clearly works to change pandemic restrictions

A couple of weeks ago, Cardinal Thomas Collins — the influential Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto — called on the Ontario government to revise its capacity rules for places of worship.

“This makes no sense,” Cardinal Collins wrote, in reference to the rules governing Toronto and Peel Region that capped attendance at 10 persons regardless of the size of the facility. He pointed out how the 10-person limit applies to his own St. Michael’s Cathedral despite the fact the grand facility can hold 1,500 persons, and yet nearby liquor stores are much smaller but can welcome more than 10 customers.

Lockdowns are a limited means of defense. They can slow but not eliminate covid spread. That’s great if you need to shore up old age homes. Used as a bludgeon they do far more harm than good. The economic and mental health devastation will far outweigh any benefit.

Corbella: Trudeau’s blaming of Mulroney on vaccine problems delusional, say experts

Corbella: Trudeau’s blaming of Mulroney on vaccine problems delusional, say experts

For months now, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has blamed everyone for Canada’s trickle of COVID-19 vaccines but himself.

Trudeau and his ministers have gone so far as to blame former Progressive Conservative prime minister Brian Mulroney — who was prime minister from 1984 to 1993 — for the privatization, or “the selling off“, of Connaught Laboratories. What he fails to mention is that Connaught Labs didn’t go anywhere. It’s now part of Sanofi Pasteur, the world’s largest manufacturer of vaccines. The Connaught Campus in Toronto accounts for one-fifth of the company’s global vaccine sales.

Ontario reports more than 1,700 new COVID-19 cases for third straight day

TORONTO — Ontario health officials are reporting more than 1,700 new cases of COVID-19 for the third day in a row.

The province confirmed 1,791 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Sunday. The case count comes after officials logged 1,745 more infections on Friday and 1,829 more infections on Saturday.

The case numbers reported over the past three days represent a significant increase from the 1,553 cases recorded on Thursday and the 1,508 recorded on Wednesday.

Big news: I got a haircut yesterday.

I had to leave TO to get one. I’m a covid refugee!

One place I called said they weren’t serving anyone from other more infected zones!

I’m oppressed by the colour of my zone!

Not a bad cut I admit. The place was packed and business was non-stop.

How bizarre to have to travel for a cut.

I feel bad, the guy who has cut our hair for 20 years still can’t open.

I will go in for a trim no matter when he is allowed to open up.

Things were a lot easier when mom or dad just gave you a kitchen brushcut.

Canada’s pandemic ‘alert’ system failed to operate properly for COVID-19: report

An interim review of why Ottawa’s early pandemic warning system failed to issue a formal alert on COVID-19 has described a lack of detailed knowledge of the system by senior managers.

The audit dated Feb. 26, and released on Saturday, was ordered by federal Health Minister Patty Hajdu after reports the Global Public Health Intelligence Network didn’t operate as intended at the onset of the pandemic.

Why are We Vaccinating Children against Covid-19?

The acute focus in this writing is on the vaccination of children under 12 years of age with the Covid-19 vaccines as this raises very serious and urgent issues that must be confronted by societies in terms of possible unnecessary harms to our children. SARS-CoV-2 virus that leads to Covid-19 disease may be used interchangeably in this report. Why this focus? Because there is now a major effort to test the new mRNA-based vaccines against SARS CoV-2 virus in young children.

What is the rationale for this and what is the basis? Why would there be a push to vaccinate six-month-old babies? Vaccinate two-year-old infants? Vaccinate six-year-old children? Ten-year-old children? Via an experimental vaccine that delivers genetic code into your cells instructing it to produce a mock portion of the virus?

Chris Selley: Canadians suffered unnecessarily under COVID because officials got one big thing wrong

Dr. Eileen De Villa, Toronto’s chief public health officer, rarely if ever errs on the side of incaution. So it was interesting this week to see her suggest lightening up a bit. She said the city should remain in “lockdown,” as the province calls the package of restrictions currently in effect in Toronto and several other Ontario jurisdictions. But she recommended some tweaks to the “lockdown” rules. Outdoor activities such as patio dining and group exercise might be fine, she averred.
