The problem with becoming a dictator is that madness often quickly follows. Caligula is an example from the past, for he was genuinely insane and died as a result of that. OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) – Police aggressively pushed back protesters, took control of some trucks and advanced toward Parliament on Saturday after arresting more than 100 people and towing away vehicles in Canada’s besieged capital. Scores of trucks left under the increasing pressure, raising authorities’ hopes for an end to the three-week protest against the country’s COVID-19 restrictions.
A group of Canadian clergy sent an open letter to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier this week rebuking him for invoking the Emergencies Act to quell the Freedom Convoy and for other actions they described as “tyrannical.”
Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs issued a statement of concern for pro-democracy activists targeted by China in Hong Kong. The statement comes amid Canada’s crackdown on the Freedom Convoy protest that has been demonstrating peacefully against the country’s rigid COVID-19 mandates.
Police in Ottawa have begun using pepper spray as they continue to push through the main protest encampment and force the crowd away from Parliament Hill.
“You will have seen officers use a chemical irritant in an effort to stop the assaultive behaviour and for officer safety,” the Ottawa Police Service tweeted on Saturday afternoon.
It comes as police in the capital city make gains pushing back the crowds — often to the sound of boos and profanity.

Ontario reports 14 more COVID-19 deaths; under 1,200 hospitalizations
Ontario reported under 1,200 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 and 14 net new deaths on Saturday, as hospitalizations continue to steadily decline.
There are currently 1,191 people battling the virus in Ontario hospitals, down from 1,704 a week ago, according to the Ministry of Health.
329 people are in ICU with #COVID19. 79% of patients admitted to the ICU were admitted for COVID-19 and 21% were admitted for other reasons but have tested positive for COVID-19.
There are 2,244 new cases of COVID-19.

More contagious BA.2 sub-variant spreading in Canada, complicating opening plans
The highly contagious Omicron sub-variant known as BA.2 is gaining a foothold in Canada just as provinces begin removing pandemic restrictions, according to newly released data.
The spread of BA.2, which is believed to be 1.4 times as contagious as the already highly transmissible BA.1 Omicron sub-variant, could complicate reopening plans now underway, or announced, in most provinces.
As he wandered the red zone of the protest site in Ottawa, David Freiheit appeared bashful about the reception he received, but also energized by it.
People wanted pictures with him, embraced him with whispers of support in his ear, and treated him like a celebrity. He was livestreaming for hours at a time, his quick legal mind providing commentary in between interviews with the people drawn to the protest, and to him.

OTTAWA — A group involved in the anti-government protest against COVID-19 measures in Ottawa is asking a court to put the brakes on federal use of the Emergencies Act to clamp down on demonstrators.
In submissions Friday to the Federal Court, Canadian Frontline Nurses and member Kristen Nagle seek an injunction staying the Liberal government’s use of the emergencies law and associated measures while their full case plays out in court.
