The problematic push for Basic Income

There has been a renewed push for the federal government to implement a Basic Income scheme over the past several months, advocates buoyed by what they see as the “success” of the rollout of CERB to deal with the pandemic. There has been a failed motion in the House of Commons on the subject, while a Liberal private member’s bill is also on the Order Paper, and delegates at both the Liberal and NDP policy conventions this weekend will be debating resolutions around it. Adding to that, my inbox has been spammed by all manner of social justice organizations calling on both parties to adopt these policies as a means of advancing the cause. A group of senators has been agitating for the cause, brandishing dubious reports by the Parliamentary Budget Officer as “proof” of its necessity. But are we really going to have a proper discussion about just what a Basic Income entails?

The Liberals are absolutely, positively not planning for that election that they’re planning for

So, as you know, our party doesn’t want an election. Mr. Trudeau has said so himself. And our convention co-chair, Terry Beech, has made it clear that “we’re certainly not focused on the election” at this convention. This explains why our convention programming will be heavily focused on planning for an election this fall that we are absolutely not focused on.

COVID-19: B.C. smashes daily record, new powers granted to shut down businesses

The provincial health officer has given WorkSafeBC inspectors the power to shut down non-essential businesses for at least 10 days if there has been COVID-19 transmission at the business premises.

Under an expedited workplace closure order that comes into effect on Monday, Dr. Bonnie Henry said health authorities would be able to direct WorkSafeBC inspectors to serve closure notices and then work with businesses on their COVID-19 safety plan once they have reopened.

How do you reach a compromise with someone who thinks invisible men from a faraway land used mind control to change an election? On top of that, they were perfectly willing to destroy the country over it. If one side is sure the other side is evil, there can never be a compromise. The best you can get is a truce in the hostilities, but eventually one side will attack again. After all, any compromise with evil is immoral on its face, so the only more thing to do is confront it.

According to the Washington Post, the Biden White House has been coordinating efforts of government agencies and private companies to develop a vaccine passport system that is supposedly to assist in returning the country to “normalcy.”

Increases in Coronavirus Cases Are Happening Mainly in States With Stricter COVID-19 Rules

When Texas Gov. Greg Abbott lifted most of his state’s remaining COVID-19 restrictions at the beginning of March, critics warned that he was inviting a public health disaster. President Joe Biden said Abbott’s changes, which among other things ended the state’s face mask mandate and allowed businesses to serve customers at full capacity, reflected “Neanderthal thinking.” Gilberto Hinojosa, chairman of the Texas Democratic Party, said the shift was “extraordinarily dangerous” and “will kill Texans.”

A month after Abbott made those decisions, newly identified infections and daily deaths continue to decline in Texas. According to Worldometer’s numbers, the seven-day average of daily new cases in Texas fell by 56 percent from March 1 to yesterday. Daily deaths fell by 64 percent during the same period.

New cases are on the rise in some states, prompting warnings that we are about to see a “fourth wave” as prematurely relaxed precautions allow the coronavirus to run wild in places where the population remains largely unvaccinated. Yet the states where cases are rising generally have stricter COVID-19 policies than Texas does.

The Other Problem with Woke Schooling: It’s Psychological Child Abuse

The anti-racism curricula increasingly adopted by America’s K-12 schools contain so much misinformation that the growing backlash against them has predictably focused on course content. Teaching children that the U.S. Constitution was designed by whites to enslave minorities, that modern scientific concepts are tainted by racism, that “right” math answers are a slight to people of color, and that the classics of Western literature should be replaced by social justice theory is not how most parents think their children ought to be educated.

Canada is primarily vaccinating people by age. That’s a big mistake

It can fairly be argued that there are not a lot of success stories to tell in Canada’s fight against COVID-19. (Except for Atlantic Canada. Can we put Nova Scotia in charge of the country yet?) It’s mostly been a saga of provinces imposing lockdowns that flatten the curve, and then relaxing them the moment they see an inch of daylight.

Alberta Independence vs. Separation

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has promised a referendum on equalization, but Alberta independence activists say there are more challenges than simply equalization payments that are driving westerners to feel more and more alienated from Canada. Alberta Economic Education Association chairman Danny Hozack says the referendum should be broadened to truly send a message to Ottawa about how Albertans feel about their place in confederation.

Trudeau’s military misconduct response highlights ‘pattern’ of ignoring complaints: Singh

Biden’s ‘Go Big’ Agenda Threatens a Lot More Than ‘White Privilege’

Democratically elected governments don’t do revolution. First and foremost, revolution throws up the wrong kinds of people to lead a democracy. Joe Biden has only been captured by the radicals. Imagine if AOC or Bernie Sanders were actually president?

And revolution is no way to usher in a change of any kind. Radical change — to the culture, to the government, or to citizens — is a recipe for perpetual revolution. Mao Zedong understood that concept very well. That’s why he deliberately engineered radical change in China’s provinces, knowing that the continuous revolution would eventually rid the country of all “counterrevolutionaries.”

But that wouldn’t work in America. The U.S. does so much better when change is “evolutionary,” preferably gradual, and ideally, one heart and mind at a time. Incrementalism was the byword of both parties when world events didn’t move at quite the manic pace they move today.
