Trudeau says he does not need mandate for pandemic budget because he already has one

Yesterday, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced that the first federal budget in more than two years will be delivered on April 19.

The budget is expected to provide a full accounting of all government spending through the pandemic, which has sent the deficit for the fiscal year to almost $400 billion.

It is also expected to outline the Liberals’ plan to spend between $70 billion and $100 billion over the coming years on stimulus to help the economy recover.

Jagmeet Singh and the NDP’s Economic Platform is All Nationalization

In an attempt to communicate themselves as a viable alternative to the federal Liberals, the NDP has gone further into far-left socialism, at no surprise to Canadians.

As Canadians across the country become fed-up with Justin Trudeau’s left-wing economic and social record, many have looked to the NDP as an alternative, only to find even more radical socialist views which appear to only be becoming more fringe as an election looms on in the distance.

China lashes out at Canada’s “ignoble” Indigenous rights record in response to sanctions

The Chinese Foreign Ministry jumped on the opportunity to slam Canada’s human rights record on Tuesday after a number of Western allies levied sanctions against individuals and entities believed to be involved in the ongoing genocide against the country’s Uyghur minority.

Is The Media Done Covering For Biden, Or Just Taking A Break?

EDITORIAL: Canada needs a federal reopening plan

All across Canada, everyone is working on their re-opening plans. Businesses, industry associations, sports clubs, you name it. Individuals and families are working on their plans for all of the fun things they’re going to do soon and the great reunions they’re planning to have.

But not the federal government. Not Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He remains Canada’s biggest downer, seemingly happy to keep the nation under some form of restrictions for whoever knows how long.

Education in crisis: Teachers are burning out, unions are preparing to strike

One year into the pandemic, teachers across the country are at a breaking point. In Quebec, they’re preparing to strike if things don’t improve dramatically.

There’s an exodus happening in Quebec’s public education system, teachers’ unions say, and the situation will worsen if the province fails to meet their demands at the negotiating table.

“Almost every day that we get calls from teachers who tell us they’ve made the decision to abandon the profession,” said Catherine Beauvais-St-Pierre, the president of the Montreal teachers’ alliance, one of nine teachers’ unions that make up the Fédération autonome de l’enseignement (FAE).

‘COVID Relief’ Bill Collides With the Constitution

Well, that didn’t take long. The first major bill passed by the new Democratic congressional majority and signed into law by our new president on March 11 had already provoked a constitutional challenge by March 17. The Left’s Culture War Is A Dangerous Distraction That Warrants Total Resistance

Bill Maher made an interesting point on his show last Friday, arguing that America’s obsession with political correctness is crippling its institutions, leaving the country hobbled in the geopolitical race with China. That’s an accurate assessment, one that also tasks the defenders of cultural sanity with resisting wokeness while not getting bogged down by trivialities at the cost of basic efficiency.

How Modern Math Spawned Woke Ethics

In our era, ideas that until quite recently would have bordered on insane have become thoroughly entrenched in academia and, increasingly, government. The “woke” ruling classes implicitly understand—as in all the cultural revolutions of history—that their power depends on punitively enforcing falsehoods. How could this have happened, so rapidly and so pervasively? How could the accrued common wisdom of mankind have come so quickly to be regarded by so many as not only false, but deeply pernicious?

Why a Canadian Law Prohibiting False Statements in the Run-Up to an Election Was Found Unconstitutional

In 2018, Canada revamped a long-existent but rarely used prohibition of fake news in the run-up to an election. According to the Canada Elections Act, making or publishing false statements about political figures’ citizenship, place of birth, education, membership in a group, legal offenses or professional qualifications—if done with the intention of influencing the results of an election—could result in a fine of $50,000 or 5 years of prison.

A few months ago, following a survey of Canadian case law, I wrote here that any legal challenge to this provision was unlikely to have much success. Perhaps I should consider throwing my crystal ball away: On Feb. 19, Ontario’s Superior Court of Justice declared that Section 91(1) of the Canada Elections Act—the section of the law on making or publishing false statements about political figures—infringes on freedom of expression protected by Section 2b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom and was therefore of no force or effect.

Let’s take a look at what happened.

Blocking is Back: Why Internet Blocking is the Next Big Canadian Policy Battle

In early 2018, Bell led a consortium of companies and organizations arguing for the creation of a new website blocking system in Canada. Complete with a new anti-piracy agency and CRTC stamp of approval, the vision was to create a new system to mandate site blocking across ISPs in Canada. Canadians challenged the so-called FairPlay proposal and the CRTC rejected the Bell application on jurisdictional grounds. Since that time, the Canadian courts have been dealing with site blocking requests (the Federal Court of Appeal is soon set to hear arguments on the issue) and the Canadian copyright review conducted by the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology decided against recommending the creation of a new administrative system for site blocking.

Conservatives hide from questions about hiring former Huawei exec

Have you heard of the Epoch Times? They are a relatively new player in the Canadian media landscape, having increased their print and online distribution over the last half decade. In all likelihood, you have read their work — despite the Canadian government scrambling to stop them.

See, the Epoch Times is staunchly anti-Communist China, and that infuriates many pro-China institutions in Canada, including the Liberal government, radical union workers, postal workers who refuse to deliver the paper and a surprising new opponent: the Conservative opposition to Trudeau.

Trudeau’s Dangerous & False Offer: Spending Without Consequences

In politics, it is almost always far easier to be the big-spender.

And in a world where central banks and profligate governments have incentivized debt accumulation and punished saving, that is even more the case than ever before.

Usually, there is a limit on how much spending a government will promise because they realize there must be a point at which fulfilling their political ambitions is outweighed by the long-term damage of saddling a nation with immense debt obligations.

But when unmoored from any sense of duty towards the future, and mired in magical thinking on the economy, all bets are off.

It’s time for Red States to start nullifying federal law

As we all know, the last election was a “tipping point” election on many different levels. Moreover, Biden is converting our military into a social justice agency and transforming our intelligence services into witch-hunters for conservatives who dared to protest a stolen election.

The pandemic and lockdowns are now almost one year old. Despite all the advances we’ve seen in other countries, such as rapid testing, improved therapeutics, and vaccinations, Canadians are forced to endure lockdowns for longer. COMMENTARY: The clues pointing to Justin Trudeau’s electoral ambitions are piling up

There was a time when the usual cycle of elections in Canada went something like this: The ruling party in power was typically the one feeling nervous about facing the electorate. Government scandals tend to accumulate and fester. Opposition parties are free to attack and inflict even more damage. And voters, by their nature, can be a fickle bunch, where familiarity with the politicians in power can breed contempt.

But the days of lean-and-hungry opposition parties demanding an election are a thing of the past.
