The shoplifting epidemic taking over America with a $100B annual price tag

The stories are everywhere: Walmart store closures in Portland and Chicago; an epidemic of drug store thefts in New York. In Baltimore, a “landmark” grocery store shuts its doors after nearly 25 years in a community desperate for fresh food.

While in San Francisco, reports of big-box chains abandoning its downtown have become near-daily occurrences.

The cause: rampant, often organized, and seemingly consequenceless shoplifting.

Maple Leaf chair Michael McCain knew about alleged bread price-fixing, Competition Bureau document suggests

With an investigation continuing in the wake of Canada Bread’s admission of guilt for its role in one of the country’s largest price-fixing scandals, a document in the long-running case’s court file suggests federal authorities believed that Maple Leaf Foods executive chair Michael McCain had personal knowledge of the alleged scheme.

The packaged meat company, which used to control Canada Bread, expressed dismay at the new owner’s guilty plea this week, saying Maple Leaf Foods stands by its denial of any wrongdoing. The actions of Maple Leaf Foods and multiple grocery retailers remain under investigation by the Competition Bureau following the plea deal and resulting $50-million fine.

German police crime statistics presented in April grossly undercounted the number of knife attacks perpetrated in the country. The statistics presented by the President of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) Holger Münch and the Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) counted 8,160 knife attacks. Official figures from Germany’s federal states and state criminal investigation offices have revealed that the real number of knife attacks is significantly higher.

Michael Higgins: The Liberal failure on crime has left a trail of broken victims

The Trudeau government has never been tough on crime; it’s just not in its DNA. But after eight years of government soft-pedalling on violent crimes and drugs, Canadians have clearly lost faith in the Liberals to protect them.

Overwhelmingly, Canadians are fearful of “catch-and-release” criminals causing more mayhem while on bail; drug dealers bringing misery into their neighbourhoods; and a government that is not listening to the concerns of the public.

A Look at the Suspects, Many With Long Criminal Histories, Behind Random Attacks in Canada

Canadians have been falling victim to unprovoked stranger attacks with increasing frequency—in the middle of the day, in stores, or walking down the street. A man in London, Ontario, was even stabbed while sitting in his car waiting for a train to pass.

Some say Canada’s growing drug problem is to blame, with drug-induced psychosis sending addicts on violent rampages. Others say the problem is a lax criminal justice system that allows the most violent to repeatedly offend.

How not to fight crime

Poverty doesn’t create crime. Crime creates poverty by destroying morals and economics. Only consequences can stop crime.

“I will not stand by and let criminals undermine our economy and the livelihood of New Yorkers. We are going to act,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams vowed.

After announcing a 44% increase in retail theft in one year, Adams promised a bold new effort called “Second Chance” and “Re-Engaging Store Theft Offenders and Retail Establishments (RESTORE)” that will allow shoplifters “to avoid prosecution or incarceration by meaningfully engaging with services to help address underlying factors that lead to shoplifting.”
