From Math Camp to Handcuffs: FTX’s Downfall Was an Arc of Brotherhood and Betrayal

Gary Wang and Sam Bankman-Fried are offering dueling accounts of the FTX fiasco and of who’s ultimately to blame.

They’d come a long way together, from teenage mathletes to MIT frat brothers to crypto billionaires.

Now the feds were closing in on both — and one was going to turn on the other.

“We can make this work,” Sam Bankman-Fried said over Signal, an encrypted messaging app.

Gary Wang didn’t reply.

This says Bankman-Fried is toast. How long he actually remains in jail is something we just have to wait on.

What Killed Tyre Nichols

His fatal torture was a tragic culmination—not of racism, but of the racism-in-policing narrative.

Is U.S. policing in a death spiral? Yes, as long as the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols by five Memphis police officers is portrayed as a manifestation of racism. The problems underlying that horrifying episode—the recruitment crisis, lax hiring standards, and depolicing—will worsen, intensified by the very policies ostensibly adopted to prevent another such travesty. The vicious circle of rising crime and a flight from the profession will accelerate.

In Canada, complex fraud schemes are targeting homeowners

A Canadian couple recently learned that their home was sold by fraudsters without their consent while they were out of town. Experts say theft of this nature is rare, but there has been a notable rise of similar cases in the country’s most populous city.

Early this year, Toronto police said they wanted the public’s help in catching two people who were involved in a complex fraud scheme.

The individuals, police said, had used fake identities to pose as owners of a home in the city. They then successfully sold the home, handing over the keys to the unsuspecting new owners.

SBF could be locked up if he continues encryption use, judge declares

A Manhattan federal judge on Thursday suggested he’d lock disgraced FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried up pending trial if the accused fraudster continues to improperly use electronic devices while out on bail.

Judge Lewis Kaplan asked federal prosecutors and Bankman-Fried’s attorneys why he should allow the alleged crypto crook to return to his parents’ California house, where he’d be surrounded by unmonitored electronic devices.

He’s displayed enough arrogance to be stupid.

Unknown ‘best friend’ called 911 after finding Idaho student Ethan Chapin murdered — not roommate Dylan Mortensen

The best friend of one of the murdered University of Idaho students found his pal stabbed to death in bed then called 911, rather than one of the surviving two roommates in the house, according to a report.

NewsNation reported Wednesday that Ethan Chapin was found dead in bed with his girlfriend Xana Kernodle by a longtime buddy, who went as far to check his pulse before calling 911, according to their sources.

Chapin and Kernodle, both 20, were killed on Nov. 13 in a knife attack along with friends Madison Mogen, 21, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, at their off-campus home is Moscow, Idaho.

Odd, not sure it means anything that this was not corrected by anyone in the know.

Sam Bankman-Fried used VPN to watch Super Bowl, slapped with new bail restriction

A federal judge slapped a new bail restriction on Sam Bankman-Fried Tuesday, after finding out the disgraced FTX founder has been using a virtual private network (VPN) to watch football in recent weeks.

Prosecutors filed a letter to U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan Monday night, alerting him that they discovered Bankman-Fried used a VPN to access the internet on Jan. 29 and Feb. 12, raising concerns that his use of a private network prevents them from monitoring his behavior online.

A final batch of court documents related to pedophile Jeffrey Epstein’s associates and “salacious” allegations against them could be released in the coming weeks — some four years after the disgraced financier’s death, a report claims.

The documents will name at least one “public figure” and will be made public within the coming months, according to a filing reviewed by the DailyMail.

The records are likely to reveal hundreds of “alleged perpetrators” and individuals accused of “serious wrongdoings,” as well as Epstein’s victims and employees.

Large amount of cash found in Honey and Barry Sherman’s wallets ruled out a break-in

Barry Sherman had $372 in his wallet when he died. Honey Sherman’s wallet was stuffed with $7,500, possibly from a visit to an ATM shortly before she was killed.

Sources say cash discovered at the crime scene explains why a homicide detective went to great lengths to calm fears in the neighbourhood shortly after the bodies were found. It was unlikely their deaths were a break-in gone wrong.

Former Liberal MP Raj Grewal seeks dismissal of breach of trust charges due to lack of evidence

A former Liberal MP is seeking the dismissal of two criminal charges connected to his time in office.

Raj Grewal’s lawyer argues that prosecutors have not presented enough evidence to find him guilty of the two breach of trust charges, and the Crown has failed to establish essential elements required for such a finding.

The Crown has sought to prove that Grewal used his political office for personal gain, offering access to events with the prime minister and help with immigration files in exchange for large loans that went toward his gambling debt.
