A Los Angeles jury has found Meta and Google liable in a landmark social media addiction trial, and they’ve awarded $3 million in damages to the plaintiff, a 20-year-old woman who claims she became addicted to social media, causing her significant mental health problems.
Conservative activist Robby Starbuck filed a defamation lawsuit against Google alleging its artificial-intelligence tools falsely connected Starbuck to sexual-assault claims and to a white nationalist.
Starbuck said he became aware of the inaccuracies in 2023 while using Bard, an early Google AI tool. Bard said that Starbuck had ties to Richard Spencer, a once-prominent white nationalist, according to the lawsuit. At the time, Starbuck took to social-media platform X and tagged Google and its CEO in a post about the details:
“Imagine a future where Bard is used to decide whether you get a loan, if you’re approved for adoption,” he asked his hundreds of thousands of followers at the time. The lawsuit says newer Google AI tools produced other falsehoods about him earlier this year, including claims that Starbuck had been accused of sexual assault.
Google avoided harsh antitrust penalties for its conduct in the U.S. search market, with a judge barring the company from entering into exclusive deals but rejecting a forced spinoff of its Chrome browser and other sweeping remedies sought by the Justice Department.
U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta in a Tuesday ruling said Google can’t pay to be the exclusive search engine on devices and browsers, but he allowed the company to continue making payments for distribution of its products, saying a prohibition on those agreements would harm recipients such as Apple.
Mehta’s order follows his ruling last year that Google illegally monopolized the search market for more than a decade. That opinion said Google used illegal distribution agreements with companies such as Apple to build and maintain a 90% market share and prevent rivals from developing competitive alternatives.

Just like your friendly TV meteorologist, current weather models could perhaps be a thing of the past. Google has unveiled an AI meteorology tech that is far faster and more accurate than traditional forecasts, per a study published in the journal “Nature.”
Devised by the search engine firm’s AI division, DeepMind, the “GenCast” model can tell if it’s going to rain 15 days ahead of time at a higher accuracy rate than the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ ENS (ECMWF) — the world’s top operational forecasting system, per the Google Deepmind blog.
This discrepancy has to do with a completely new monsoon-divining methodology. Whereas current iterations are “deterministic, and provided a single, best estimate of future weather,” GenCast “comprises an ensemble of 50 or more predictions, each representing a possible weather trajectory,” the blog’s authors write.
So how will this be weaponized against the public?
US justice department officials plan to ask a judge to force Google to sell off its Chrome browser to dismantle the monopoly it has over the internet search market, in a major intervention against one of the world’s biggest tech companies.
The Department of Justice (DoJ) last month filed court papers saying it was considering enforcing “structural remedies” to prevent Google from using some its products.
The DoJ will reportedly push for Google, which is owned by Alphabet, to sell the browser and also ask a judge to require new measures related to artificial intelligence as well as its Android smartphone operating system, according to Bloomberg.
Google has a long history of interfering in American elections in favor of the most liberal politicians. In the lead-up to the 2024 election, like the most recent presidential debate, Google is giving Americans the rigged ABC treatment.
In the past, Google buried the campaign websites of Republican candidates. Now the search giant very clearly pads its search results about political candidates with leftist legacy news articles, many of which are hostile to Republicans and either neutral or favorable toward Democrats. Readers will have to sift through the biased news before they even see the organic results of their searches, let alone a candidate’s website.
Canada seems to be having difficulty understanding and regulating the internet.

Google Violated Antitrust Laws in Online Search, Judge Rules
Google acted illegally to maintain a monopoly in online search, a federal judge ruled on Monday, a landmark decision that strikes at the power of tech giants in the modern internet era and that may fundamentally alter the way they do business.
Judge Amit P. Mehta of U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia said in a 277-page ruling that Google had abused a monopoly over the search business. The Justice Department and states had sued Google, accusing it of illegally cementing its dominance, in part, by paying other companies, like Apple and Samsung, billions of dollars a year to have Google automatically handle search queries on their smartphones and web browsers.
“Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” Judge Mehta said in his ruling.
Google has severely throttled users’ ability to search for the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump less than three weeks after he avoided certain death by less than an inch. In doing so, Google joins what appears to be a trend to suppress information about the attack.
